Frank Grillo Says Marvel Blew It, He’s Way Happier In The DCU
Action star Frank Grillo, slated to appear in the upcoming Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr., just opened up about his work in the new DC Universe and expressed disappointment over how his villainous character Crossbones was used in the MCU’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War. Grillo said, “I was just with the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito, and it’s kind of like, ‘I miss those guys, but you blew it.’ Now we’re going over here.”
Teasing Creature Commandos
While promoting his upcoming movie Lights Out, scheduled to release on February 16, actor Frank Grillo made teasing comments regarding his role as Rick Flag Sr. in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The actor also revealed that, unlike his MCU character Crossbones, his upcoming portrayal is likely to stick around the new DC Universe for quite some time. Sadly, he wasn’t at liberty to share any more details than he already did.
Underutilized At Marvel
Apparently, the Warrior star appreciates his past collaboration with the aforementioned heavy hitters associated with the MCU but points towards a missed opportunity to explore Crossbones as a character—Grillo was very vocal about the character’s treatment before. Besides his portrayals in the aforementioned Captain America movies, Frank Grillo also appeared in Avengers: Endgame and the animated What If…? where he played Crossbones variants—the prime MCU Crossbones was killed off in Civil War.
Some Actors Prefer DC To Marvel
Given just how underutilized Crossbones was in the MCU, and the current criticism towards MCU‘s releases overall, it’s really not that surprising that Frank Grillo is now with the Distinguished Competition. Other actors, such as Dave Bautista, also made it very clear that they would join James Gunn’s DC Universe provided an opportunity to do so, but it would just be a matter of finding the right role.
Rick Flag Sr.
Fortunately for Frank Grillo, the upcoming role in the Creature Commandos he was entrusted with is far more integral to the DCU than his role at the MCU ever was. His character, Rick Flag Sr., father of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., is the leader of the titular team, which includes Eric Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, Nina Mazursky, and G.I. Robot—voiced by Sean Gunn.
Creature Commandos
Creature Commando is an adult animated television show based on DC’s eponymous team; it will be the first television series in the new DC Universe and its first overall installment, scheduled to launch in late 2024 on the MAX streaming service. As such, it will be part of the DC’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Frank Grillo also stated that Rick Flag Sr. is expected to make a live-action debut as well, and many have speculated that he might debut in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. However, the actor debunked those theories.
Frank Grillo’s Lights Out is scheduled to release on February 16, 2024, and Creature Commandos is eyeing a late 2024 release window.
