Sci-Fi Action Franchise-Killing Movie Conquers Netflix

The 2016 superhero film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows is in the top 10 of the Netflix streaming chart along with its 2014 predecessor, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dave Green was brought on board to direct the sequel, replacing Jonathan Liebesman, who helmed the first film. Writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who worked on the first movie, returned to pen the script.

The Setup

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 follows the adventures of the four anthropomorphic, pizza-loving turtles, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, as they battle the evil Shredder, who has joined forces with the extraterrestrial Krang to take over the world. The turtles must thwart their evil plans alongside their human allies, April O’Neil, Vern Fenwick, and newcomer Casey Jones.

A year after defeating Shredder, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles learn from April O’Neil (Megan Fox) that scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) is helping Shredder (Brian Tee) to escape from prison. Despite the turtles’ efforts, Shredder gets away using a teleportation gadget and inadvertently ends up in another world where he meets the alien warlord Krang.

Turtle Tension Takes Over

Krang tasks Shredder with finding three pieces of a machine on Earth to open a portal for his invasion. Shredder recruits Bebop and Rocksteady and uses Krang’s mutagen to mutate them into a warthog and rhinoceros. April witnesses this and snatches the remaining mutagen. Donatello suggests using the mutagen to turn the turtles into humans, but Leonardo opposes, causing tension among the brothers.

Raphael teams up with Michelangelo, April, Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), and Vern (Will Arnett) to retrieve the mutagen from the police. However, the Foot foils their plan, and the turtles’ existence is exposed.

Mixed Reception And Scrapped Sequel

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 received mixed reviews. While critics praised its action sequences and faithful adaptation of the source material, viewers criticized its shallow plot.

As a result, the film’s box office performance was underwhelming compared to its predecessor. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 earned $245 million at the global box office against a $135 million budget. Deemed a financial failure, a planned third film in the series was scrapped in favor of the animated 2023 reboot Mutant Mayhem.

The Michael Bay Touch

Michael Bay

Michael Bay served as a producer for both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, bringing his signature style of explosive action and visual effects to the franchise. While his involvement sparked controversy among fans who were concerned that he would alter the core too many elements of the source material, the films capitalized on his track record of producing successful blockbuster franchises.

A Perfect Nostalgia Trip

Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 changed some aspects of the Turtles’ origin story while sidelining Shredder’s links to Master Splinter, the movie is a delightful addition to the franchise. It showcases a vibrant blend of action, humor, and nostalgia, successfully capturing the essence of what makes the Turtles so endearing.

One of the film’s standout aspects is its faithful portrayal of the turtles themselves. Each member of the quartet is brought to life with charm and personality, staying true to their iconic traits while also showcasing growth and camaraderie. From Leonardo’s steadfast leadership to Michelangelo’s infectious humor, the turtles’ dynamic shines brightly throughout the film.

A Worthy Addition To The Franchise

GFR SCORE

Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows may not have significantly impacted the film industry, it remains part of the franchise’s broader legacy, which has experienced a resurgence in popularity fueled by nostalgia for the classic iterations of the characters as well as new adaptations.
