Black Widow wasn’t just Scarlett Johansson’s swan song as Natasha Romanoff but also introduced some very interesting characters in the ever-expanding world of Marvel, especially Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. Thus even though Natasha’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is over, Yelena is expected to keep the legacy of Black Widow alive. But that’s not all when it comes to her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A new report says she is returning as a major villain.
Black Widow ended with the usual post-credits scene which is common in Marvel films. We saw Florence Pugh’s Yelena arriving at Natasha’s grave and getting all emotional before Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine steps on her private moment. From their brief conversation, it becomes obvious that Yelena has joined the rag-tag team of superheroes that Valentina is putting together as the latter gives her the next mission- killing Clint Barton (Jeremy Runner). Apparently, Yelena is unaware of the circumstances of her sister’s death as Valentina claims that Barton is responsible for her untimely demise.
This scene was enough to establish that Florence Pugh will be soon returning to reprise her role in the upcoming Disney+ series, Hawkeye. But in case anyone had any doubts about her being an outright villain in the show (at least until she learns the truth), The Cosmic Circus has reported that she is indeed returning to the world of Marvel with the show and will be playing the role of an antagonist.
In fact, the report puts forward a lot of new information like the IMDB page of Hawkeye is incorrect as it mentions that the show will have eight episodes as according to the publication’s sources, there are only six episodes in the first season. Apparently, even though Florence Pugh will be playing a significant role in Hawkeye, she is not going to appear in all the episodes. Again, it won’t be a cameo role as she is going to be in multiple episodes.
Also, contrary to rumors that Marvel is planning to push back the premiere of Hawkeye, the publication has reported that it is still scheduled to hit the streamer in November 2021. While Florence Pugh’s appearance in the series is confirmed, the same can’t be said for Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina. Given how she painted Barton as the one responsible for Natasha’s death, it is apparent that she somehow knows what happened on the planet Vormir (in Avengers Endgame) and deliberately chose to twist the details. While many believe that it cements the actress’ appearance in Hawkeye, according to TCC, she has not shot any scenes for the Disney+ series. This obviously doesn’t mean that we won’t be seeing more of Valentina- she is busy building her own team (Thunderbolts) and will probably crop up from time to time to swipe in another aimless superhero.
The only thing that’s confirmed beyond a doubt is that Florence Pugh is all set to play a very important role in the upcoming Disney+ series. While it is being speculated that she will be killing Barton and that’s how the mantle of Hawkeye will end up with Kate Bishop, this particular plotline won’t take place in early episodes as the aim series is not merely about allowing Hawkeye’s story to reach its conclusion but also exploring Yelena’s character in a way that she is ready for her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
