Get Your First Look At DC’s New Batman Series In Leaked Photo
The Art of Batman tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo showing Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone on the new The Batman spin-off, The Penguin.
One of the most interesting things about The Batman was that, in addition to giving us so many awesome scenes with Robert Pattinson being an amazing Caped Crusader, it also gave us a better glimpse of the crime families that carved Gotham City up into pieces. In the upcoming HBO Max series The Penguin, we are going to get an extended look at criminals new and old through the lens of Oswald Cobblepot, who is consolidating his power after big boss Carmine Falcone was bumped off by The Riddler. Now, we’ve gotten a glimpse of Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone on set.
The tweet insists that she has been cast in “an undisclosed role” in The Penguin, but you don’t need the Batcomputer to know that she has been cast as Carmine Falcone’s daughter in order to emphasize the powerful reach this crime family still has over Gotham, and she is a character that Batman fans of different generations should be very familiar with. In the delightfully campy Gotham series, for example, she was a mob boss who went to war with Oswald Cobblepot as they vied for control of the city. While this HBO Max show seems like it will be much more serious in tone than that old show, we imagine that there will be a similarly antagonistic relationship between her character and The Penguin.
Casting Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone also builds off of Gotham, establishing Falcone as a sexy character who is something of a femme fatale. For long-term comics fans, this is a major departure from the Sofia that we saw in the comic series Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory. There, Sofia was a hulking woman who could physically intimidate just about anyone short of Bane himself, but giving her more realistic proportions is in line with the more grounded world of The Penguin (plus, they’ve already transformed Colin Farrell into a large thug via so many layers of makeup, and likely didn’t want to do that again to another actor).
Speaking of Farrell, he was also on the set of The Penguin when these photos of Cristin Milioti were taken. What makes this interesting is that many fans speculate these photos are showing us the actors filming a scene at the funeral of Carmine Falcone. It makes sense that Sofia would be there to grieve for her father, but Cobblepot openly hated the man and was planning to gun him down before Riddler took the fatal shot, so this may very well be the scene that pits these two characters against one another.
To see exactly how everything shakes about between Sofia Falcone and The Penguin, we’re going to have to wait for the show to release on HBO Max. Sadly, it doesn’t have an official release date, though many sources point to the show dropping in either late 2023 or early 2024, most likely to help keep The Batman on audiences’ minds ahead of its 2025 sequel.
And since James Gunn now wants more connectivity between the DC shows and movies, we’re hoping (even though The Batman is outside of the proper DCU) that we’ll end up seeing the beautiful but deadly Sofia Falcone on the big screen in The Batman 2.
