Firefly Prequel Revealed, Origin Story Being Explored
Firefly is perhaps one of the most egregious examples of a show canceled before its time, but the beloved show is now getting a prequel, albeit in comic form. It was recently announced by Boom! Studios that there’s a new prequel comic series titled Firefly: Malcolm Reynolds Year One that will delve into the early adventures of Nathan Fillion’s Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds.
Sam Humphries is writing the series, Giovanni Fabiano is on board as the artist, and Gloria Martinelli is coloring.
Firefly Has Evolved Into A Multimedia Franchise
Both Humphries and Martinelli have worked on the Firefly: The Fall Guys miniseries, making them a perfect fit for a prequel story. According to Boom’s press release, the series will show us the obstacles Mal faced on his journey to eventually becoming the Captain of the Serenity spaceship and how becoming a Browncoat was “always meant to be.”
For those who have wanted to see the early days of the Unification War, which saw the Browncoats fight and lose against becoming part of the Alliance, it seems like this comic series will fill in some of the gaps.
The Rich World Of Firefly
This is also the Boom! Studios debut for artist Giovanni Fabiano, with Sam Humphries speaking about his role in the Firefly prequel in the press release, saying, “Giovanni, of course, killed it, and when you read this book you’ll be able to say you saw him when.”
Boom Studios has been a mainstay for the Firefly franchise in recent years, obtaining the comics license from Dark Horse in 2018. The company has since released a 36-issue Firefly sequel series, another sequel series titled All-New Firefly in 2022, the aforementioned The Fall Guys miniseries, a flash-forward miniseries titled Brand New Verse, the graphic novels Watch How I Soar and The Sting, and now this upcoming prequel series.
The Origin Of Malcolm Reynolds
Fans who want to check out the first issue of the Firefly prequel can look forward to September 4th, when Firefly: Malcolm Reynolds Year One #1 hits shelves. If you want to get ahead of the game, you can pre-buy the issue at your local comic store or pre-order a digital copy on Kindle, iBooks, or other places you buy your digital comics. In the meantime, if you haven’t seen the original series for yourself yet, now is a great time to catch up with it.
Get Paid, Keep Flying
Or, if you’ve seen the series before, you can always check out the show again in anticipation of the Firefly prequel comic. The series was created and directed by Joss Whedon and takes place in the year 2517 after humans have found a new star system. The series follows the crew of the Serenity, a Firefly-class spaceship led by Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, as they adventure the new solar system and take jobs to survive.
Streaming For Free
Firefly was infamously canceled before the first season even finished airing, and it quickly got a ton of attention when it was released on DVD. Needless to say, people were not happy that the show was kiboshed long before its time, and it eventually got a film titled Serenity that continued the story of the first season.
If you want to watch Firefly, you can stream it for free on the CW’s website or with a subscription on Hulu and you can pick up the prequel comic on September 4.
