Final Destination Franchise Getting Rebooted
The upcoming Final Destination 6 has been in the production pipeline for a while now, with the project first announced back in 2019. Now, the film is getting closer than ever to coming to fruition, and the production designer for the film, Rachel O’Toole, revealed that it would be a reboot. In an exclusive interview with The Direct, O’Toole said, “It’s got a really fresh take on it, and we do consider it a reboot.”
Final Destination 6 has been in the works for years, but now it’s finally happening, and it’s promising to reboot the franchise.
It sounds like Final Destination 6 was very close to beginning production, as O’Toole also reveals they were just a couple of weeks out from filming when the writer’s strike hit. The writer’s strike came to an end in September, but now the film will continue to be on filming hiatus until the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end. However, it seems like the team is ready to hit the ground running as soon as the AMPTP is able to make a deal with SAG-AFTRA that both sides can agree on.
While Final Destination 6 will be a reboot, it will feature at least one character from previous films — Tony Todd’s William Bludworth.
Final Destination 6 has waited out both the COVID-19 pandemic and a historic strike, so what’s a little more waiting? In any case, the film franchise looks like it will be taking a pretty major pivot, as it will feature a plot that follows first responders rather than the younger characters the films typically feature. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein will be co-directing the film, while Guy Busik penned the screenplay.
While Final Destination 6 will be a reboot, it will feature at least one character from previous films — Tony Todd’s William Bludworth. Bludworth has been a featured character throughout the series, so it seems like the film likely takes place in the same universe but maybe won’t be taking the overall canon of the franchise into account. Either way, fans are undoubtedly excited about the return of the franchise.
It’s been over a decade since Final Destination 5 (Final Destination 3D), which was a hit film and praised as a return to form for the series.
The previous entry to the franchise was 2011’s Final Destination 5, which was a financial success and generally well-received by fans. It was seen as a sort of return to form, but it seems like the team behind the franchise is ready to shake up the formula again. The fifth film also featured 3D, a huge trend at the time, but it seems likely the fifth film may forego that effect this time around.
Interestingly, 2009’s The Final Destination was meant to be the final film in the franchise, but money talks and the financial success of that film led to the fifth film being made and released just two years later. Tony Todd even said in 2011 that there would be back-to-back sequels filmed if the fifth film did well enough. This time, the hiatus between the films is more than a decade, so the expectations are definitely high.
So, there’s no release date at this time for Final Destination 6, but hopefully, we’ll learn more about it soon. Franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick confirmed that filming will begin right after the SAG-AFTRA strike ends. We’ll keep you updated on the status of the film and the release date, so make sure to stay tuned.
