Beloved Dark Fantasy Anime Gets Two New Seasons

By Nina Phillips | Updated

Anime fans are no strangers to seasons taking years to come out, if ever. Fans of Blue Exorcist are more aware of this than others, with the release of each of the first three seasons taking over five years. While fans can at least be happy that they are getting more of their favorite show, however far apart, the tides may be turning for the franchise, with the fourth season coming out less than a year after the third and another part of the series announced for early 2025.

The Year Of Blue Exorcist

Technically, it’s not two seasons, but two cours of one season. However, they each have their own name, with the one in October called Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga and the one in January of next year called Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga.

This season is a direct sequel to Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga, which came out on January 6, 2024. These two cours will make up the fourth season of the series, alongside an OVA and a movie.

The Returning Voice Cast

The cast for the next Blue Exorcist season has also been announced. Some of the cast include Nobuhiko Okamoto (Assassination Classroom) voicing Rin Okumura, Jun Fukuyama (Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War) voicing Yukio Okumura, Ayahi Takegaki (Gundam Reconguista in G) voicing Kuro, Daisuke Ono (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) voicing Arthur A. Angel, and Eri Kitamura (My Hero Academia) voicing Izumo Kamiki. Despite the years between the seasons, most of the actors are returning voices.

Many of the cast for Blue Exorcist are familiar names, with Daisuke Yoshida (Hunter x Hunter) returning as director, Toshiya Ono (86) returning as character designer, and Yurie Oohigashi (Another) returning as animation director. The team works under Studio VOLN (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas).

Over A Decade Since Season 1

The series has been stretched out over the years. The first season of Blue Exorcist was produced in 2011, and the second came out in 2017. The movie was released in 2012.

The third season of Blue Exorcist wasn’t released until early 2024, so having a fourth season come out in the same year, not five or more years later, is pretty exciting news for fans.

Sons Of Satan

For those who haven’t started watching Blue Exorcist yet, the story follows a young man named Rin Okumura and his twin Yukio Okumura, who are the sons of Satan. They were raised by Shiro Fujimoto, an exorcist, and spent much of their young lives not realizing who their actual father was.

It isn’t until Shiro dies that Rin learns who his father is, and his powers reveal themselves. To honor the man who raised him, he decides to become an exorcist and joins True Cross Academy to learn to control his powers.

A Well-Loved Anime About To Get More Popular

The series is pretty well received, with every season, the OVA, and the movie all having above a 7 out of 10 for the average score on My Anime List. All of the seasons of Blue Exorcist are available to stream on Crunchyroll, though the movie and the OVA are not available on the platform.
