Fan-Favorite RPG Anime Series Coming To Netflix

Sakuna of Rice and Ruin was a popular RPG video game released on several platforms in 2020. Now, four years later, the game has been adapted into an anime and is released weekly on Crunchyroll and in Japan. Though it’s a little behind when it comes to airing, Netflix will pick up the season as well, releasing weekly episodes.

Banished To The Isle Of Demons

Sakuna of Rice and Ruin is set in the fictional ancient land of Yanato. The land is divided into two realms, one where humans live (The Lowly Realm) and one where gods rule (The Lofty Realm).

Princess Sakuna (Naomi Oozora) is the daughter of the god of war and the goddess of harvest. She’s rather lazy and avoids work whenever she can. Unfortunately, this gets her in trouble, and she is banished to the Isle of Demons, known as Hinoe Island.

To survive on the island, Sakuna can no longer be lazy. She must fight off demons and try to harvest food in the barren land.

Based On The Acclaimed Game

The anime is produced by P.A. Works (Ya Boy Kongming!) and is based on a 2020 video game of the same name by Edelweiss and Marvelous. Masayuki Yoshihara (Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms) is the director of the anime version of Sakuna of Rice and Ruin.

It might sound strange for an anime to be based on a game, but it’s actually very common, and a pretty popular practice and Sakuna of Rice and Ruin is far from the only anime to have origins besides manga or light novels. The Pokemon franchise is probably one of the most significant examples, but it’s far from the only. Danganronpa, Persona, Fate/stay night, and Steins; Gate are all based on games of some sort as well.

The Jury Is Out

While not all are adapted well, there are plenty of anime, like the ones above, that make a name for themselves after being turned into an anime. Games with stories tend to be easier to adapt, but even some fighting games have managed to make a compelling anime. It remains to be seen how Sakuna of Rice and Ruin does as an adaptation.

Early Reviews Are Mixed

So far, those who have seen the series have rated it an average score of 6.48 out of 10 on My Anime List, but with the series not complete yet, there is still room for Sakuna of Rice and Ruin to increase or decrease in its score as the series wraps up.

Sakuna of Rice and Ruin has been airing in Japan since early July 2024. However, as of August 10, 2024, the anime will also be available on Netflix, though that’s not the only platform fans can watch the series on.

Arriving On Netflix Soon

If you want to watch Sakuna of Rice and Ruin, it will be available on Netflix, as well as Crunchyroll, with both services releasing the episodes weekly. However, with Crunchyroll a few episodes ahead already, as they were simulcasting with Japan’s release, it remains to be seen if Netflix is going to start from the beginning or catch up with Crunchyroll and go from there.
