If the trailer is any indication, the Fallout series will boast the same retro-futuristic vibe that the games have so expertly illustrated through their gameplay. Set 200 years after the apocalypse, the series will center on a group of citizens who are forced to leave the safety of their luxury fallout shelters. They must fend for themselves while navigating through a world that has been destroyed by nuclear war.

Though the trailer is short and sweet, it packs a punch, as we are presented with jaw-dropping establishing shots of a post-apocalyptic hellscape full of terrifying creatures and collapsed buildings.

The prevailing sentiment is that the visuals, music, and characters are spot-on, and we have a worthy adaptation on our hands.

The Fallout series will star Ella Purnell (Maleficent), Aaron Moten (Emancipation), Walton Goggins (Justified). The first three episodes of the series are directed by Jonathan Nolan, and the series as a whole is executive produced by Todd Howard, who directed various games in the series under the Bethesda Game Studios banner.

Under Howard’s guidance, the series won’t be a direct adaptation of any previous games, but rather tell an original story while using the lore that has been previously established by the franchise.

But what’s most exciting about the Fallout series is how well-received the trailer is by long-time fans of the franchise. Die-hard fans of any video game franchise are a great measuring stick for television adaptations, as they are more often than not the harshest critics. While there are some murmurs in the background that express some doubts, the prevailing sentiment is that the visuals, music, and characters are spot-on, and we have a worthy adaptation on our hands.

And it’s worth noting that we’re talking about people who have claimed to have racked up thousands of hours of game-play over the years. In other words, if subject matter experts are saying that the Fallout series looks promising, then we should probably take their word for it.

Video game fandom notwithstanding, the Fallout series could potentially win over new audiences, as it’s telling an original story. It’s not uncommon for video game adaptations to alienate a non-gamer audience due to the extensive amount of backstory that needs to be digested in order to be fully invested the series. But if all of the elements that made the video games great are present, while pushing the franchise into new territory, then casual gamers and hardcore fans alike will enjoy what the upcoming series is offering.

The Fallout series is currently slated for an April 12 2024 release on Amazon Prime Video.
