Fairy Tail Anime Gets A Second Video Game And Fans Are Stoked
On June 18, Nintendo released a Nintendo Direct of new and upcoming games. During the event, Nintendo revealed a new Fairy Tail game, called Fairy Tail 2. The RPG is set to come out sometime this winter, with more details along the way.
Fairy Tail 2
Since this was the reveal, not much was yet announced. Koei Tecmo (Atelier Ryza) and Gust (Nights of Azure) are the teams behind the new Fairy Tail game. Based on the footage, it’s going to be an RPG with real-time battles that change based on the magic of the team members in your party, which looks to be Fairy Tail Guild members mostly.
Gust has worked with Koei Tecmo for many games, including the Atelier franchise. They’re also the same developer used to create the first Fairy Tail game.
The Alvarez Empire Arc
The story will follow Fairy Tail, the anime, set specifically during the Alvarez Empire arc of the series. For those who haven’t watched or completed Fairy Tail yet, this will take you to the very end of the story.
As the name suggests, Fairy Tail 2 is the second Fairy Tail game from Gust and Koei Tecmo. The first, just called Fairy Tail was released in 2020 on PlayStation 4, the Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
The story is a sequel, so although they don’t have to be played together, the story will make more sense if they are at least played in order.
New Stories
Fairy Tail 2 offers some improvements from the first Fairy Tail game. According to Koei Tecmo (via Gematsu), “Fairy Tail 2 features 3D graphics and improved gameplay with more intense and spectacular battles… Players will also be able to explore the vast map seamlessly, enhancing the experience of the original work while furthering the thrilling story of the final chapter.”
According to the same statement, there is more than just the Alvarez Empire arc to play. There are also going to be stories for specific characters, and the original story, “Key to Hidden Secrets” that continues after the final battle.
How To Play It
The first Fairy Tail game wasn’t necessarily the first game to come out based on the series. However, it was one of the first that wasn’t a Japanese exclusive, which is why Fairy Tail was so popular.
Though the second Fairy Tail game was announced during the Nintendo Direct, it’s coming to more than just the Nintendo Switch. It will also be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the computer via Steam. Unfortunately it looks like Xbox is skipped in this game’s release
The Anime
While this Fairy Tail game is fairly niche, mainly for fans of the original anime or manga, that still gives it a pretty huge fanbase. Though the anime ended in 2013, Fairy Tail is still ranked #53 for popularity according to My Anime List, with well over a million users having marked it complete.
For those who are interested in the Fairy Tail game, but haven’t read or watched it, it helps to know some of the plot. Fairy Tail is a Shonen adventure set in Earth-land, an alternate world where many wizards and guilds apply for jobs. One particular character, Natsu Dragneel is on the hunt for his father and ends up a part of the Fairy Tail Guild.
