After years in development, DC’s The Flash movie has finally started production and the film’s producer Barbara Muschietti, who is also the wife of The Flash’s director Andy Muschietti, has posted the first photo of star Ezra Miller on set.

The Flash movie has been in the works from DC and Warner Bros. for years. In fact, it has been seven years since Ezra Miller was confirmed to play the superhero back in 2014, with a release date scheduled for March 16, 2018. He did, however, show up in the 2016 DC movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then reprised his role as the Barry Allen / The Flash in Justice League the following year. But as for his solo movie, it has been fraught with issues for years.

The Flash was originally set with Seth Grahame-Smith writing and directing. It looked like things were moving in the right direction until Grahame-Smith was let go in 2016 because of “creative differences.” Rick Famuyiwa, director of Dope, quickly came aboard and even got so far into production that he cast Kiersey Clemons as Flash’s love interest, Iris West. But just a few months before the team was going to get the cameras rolling, Famuyiwa left the movie, also due to creative differences. The only thing directors seem to agree on with the studios is that Ezra Miller will be playing The Flash.

The film then brought on Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, writers and directors of Game Night, to take over. That didn’t last, as Ezra Miller reportedly fought so much with the directors over the tone of the movie that Miller teamed up with scribe Grant Morrison to write their own version of The Flash. Goldstein and Daley left the project, which is when It director Andy Muschietti entered the picture. Christina Hodson, known for writing Unforgettable, Bumblebee, and Birds of Prey, was brought in to deliver a new take on The Flash and she obviously delivered something that all involved could agree upon.

What fans do know for sure about The Flash movie is that both Michael Keeton and Ben Affleck will be playing their version of Batman alongside Ezra Miller’s Flash. Andy Muschietti shared with MovieWeb what we will see from Affleck’s Batman. He started by saying that Affleck’s Batman will have “a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

Along with the rumors of The Flash movie’s plot, there are persistent rumblings of other stars beyond Ezra Miller set to make an appearance in the film. Gal Gadot has been heavily rumored to appear with her golden lasso as is another previous version of Superman, with Brandon Routh said to be making an appearance. There are even rumors of Danny DeVito showing up as the Penguin and Nicholas Cage finally getting to play Superman. Muschietti had very little to say on confirming any of these rumors but did add that The Flash “will take you to a place where the DC Universe hasn’t gone before, so it’s very exciting.”

Ezra Miller’s The Flash is – for now – scheduled to hit the big screen on November 4, 2022.
