Extraction Spinning Off Its Best Character Into New Film
Extraction 2 director Sam Hargrave hints that Golshifteh Farahani may be getting her own Extraction spinoff movie.
Chris Hemsworth’s heart-pounding Extraction franchise just saw its sequel hit Netflix, and now we already know that Extraction 3 is on the way. While the third film will undoubtedly continue the story of Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, it seems there may be potential for a spin-off in the near future. In a recent interview with Collider, director Sam Hargrave teased that fan-favorite character Nik Kahn (Golshifteh Farahani) may be getting a spin-off of her own.
In the interview, Hargrave said, “We did this scene… and we threw a line in there when she’s kind of empathizing with the mom, and saying, ‘I know what it feels like, I’ve been there,’ and it’s subtle, it’s an Easter egg, but that’s kind of hinting towards her and Yaz’s own spinoff movie.”
Yaz, played by Adam Bessa, is Nik’s brother and a member of the mercenary crew, so it appears that the spin-off might be some sort of origin story for the two or explore one of their earlier mercenary missions. With this spin-off and the threequel in the pipeline, it seems like Netflix is well on its way to building an Extraction universe.
Extraction was an unexpected hit when it first hit Netflix in 2020. The film was based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, with Joe Russo adapting the screenplay. It followed Chris Hemsworth as a black ops mercenary who takes on a mission to save a drug lord’s son.
While Extraction‘s story wasn’t anything mind-blowing, the film was wildly entertaining thanks to the decision to give Sam Hargrave the reins to direct the film. Hargrave was best known for his stunt coordination work in the MCU at the time, and the film was his directorial debut. Hargrave took his in-depth stunt knowledge and put it to good use, creating an extremely kinetic and exciting action thriller in the process.
Extraction 2 continued that thread with more incredible action set pieces and fight scenes with Hargrave behind the camera. The sequel also built more intrigue into the characters, taking a more character-focused approach than the previous film. This time, the film follows Rake as he takes on a mission to rescue a family from a Georgian gangster.
Along with Chris Hemsworth and Farahani, the film stars Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Andro Jafaridze, and Daniel Bernhardt. Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan was a fast fan-favorite from the previous film, so bringing her back was definitely a great idea, and now it seems like a sequel is firmly in the cards. Hopefully, we’ll get to see her return again in the upcoming Extraction 3.
