This article is more than 2 years old
Tom Hanks has starred in a number of classic movies over the years. His filmography is littered with plenty of films that have become beloved staples in the lives of many movie fans. The actor has managed to amass one of the more impressive bodies of work in modern Hollywood history. Of course, that does mean that the powers-that-be are looking at what possible films in the actor’s past could be due for a remake. And it looks like one of Hanks’s comedies is the next project up for a new take.
One of our trusted and proven inside sources has confirmed that Disney is back on track to remake the iconic Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah rom-com Splash. The remake was announced way back in 2016 with Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell to star in the leading roles but with the idea of gender-flipping the leads. Therefore, Tatum would be playing an attractive merman and Bell would be the human that falls in love with him. However, the project seemed to stall with the last update coming from Bell back in 2019 saying that the movie was still being written. Since then, it has been radio silence.
Now, our source has said that the Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah classic is back in active development. We weren’t able to confirm whether or not Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell were still attached as the leads, but it seems like that is still the case from what else we could gather. Bell has clearly maintained a solid relationship with Disney over the years. She just recently starred in the film Godmothered that premiered on Disney+ so it seems that she is still in good standing with the Mouse House. And Channing Tatum might even end up joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So as far as we can tell, they are still slated to star in the project.
The last time that Splash really made headlines was when the Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah movie was added to the streaming service Disney+. The movie famously included shots of Daryl Hannah’s backside but the Disney+ version was filled with censored moments, one of which you can see in the video above. That also highlighted many of the other movies that Disney was censoring and altering for their streaming platform. One has to assume that the remake of Splash will adhere to Disney’s modern sensibility of content. So if you were hoping to see Channing Tatum show a little cheek, you may want to scale back your expectations.
There were a few other things we were not able to confirm with our source. The first is whether or not Tom Hanks or Daryl Hannah would be making cameo appearances in this new version. The other is if the Splash remake will be headed to theaters or if it will be made for Disney+. Either way, we certainly hope we will get to see both Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah show up in the movie as a nod to fans of the original. We will be keeping our feelers out for any other significant developments with this newest remake in a long line of Disney remakes.
