Update: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive was confirmed, and The Conjuring series is said to be in development from Warner Bros.

The Conjuring has already created a fairly huge world around the original movie, growing the franchise into multiple stories and a spider web of scary tales. It looks like that world is only going to get bigger in the coming years. Giant Freakin Robot has another exclusive from our trusted and proven source that The Conjuring 4 is in active development and there are other series in the works too. We are set for a massive expansion in this universe over the coming years.

HBO is leading the charge with The Conjuring 4 and looks like they are jumping on the chance to make sure the horror franchise stays front and center with new stories. There is currently no reported timeline on when this will begin production, though considering the timeline of the last film it looks like it will be a bit before that ramps up. Considering there is a series coming as well, it stands to reason we see overlap between the two stories to continue to maintain an interconnected universe.

There are still sparse details on this The Conjuring 4 exclusive, but it is likely we see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to their respective roles for the movies at least. The original The Conjuring came out back in 2013 with the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, self-proclaimed demonologists who are tasked with ridding all manners of evil from people’s homes and even their bodies. With an Exorcist-style feel to the terror levels, the film was a massive hit, scoring more than $300 million at the box office on its $20 million budget.

Setting the stage for The Conjuring 4 were the subsequent sequels which have come out over the years. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprised their roles for The Conjuring 2 and then The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It which hit the big screen back in May. Even in a pandemic movie theater scene, the film was another box office win for the franchise, hitting $194 million in sales. There’s good reason to keep the scary party going here and sectioning it off into an HBO series as well.

That’s because The Conjuring 4 would likely be part of the original franchise, but a series could take its marching orders from the other movies that have entered this universe over the years. Those include flicks like Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home as well as The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona. These latter movies are more stage-setters and prequels around the demonic possessions and backgrounds for characters in future movies.

The Conjuring 4 would likely only add to the massive haul this franchise has taken at the box office over the years. In total, the eight movies have taken in more than $2 billion dollars worldwide and scored favorably with critics across the board. In an age when horror movies can be bland and derivative, they’ve managed to create a viable franchise around this story and world with only more movies and series to come. We are likely to get considerably more details soon around what could be a massive undertaking for HBO.
