Exclusive: Tails Solo Movie In Development
Thanks to a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot, we can report that a Tails movie is in development.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been a hit in the world of video games, comic books, and animated TV series. When the studio found itself with a huge live-action hit in 2020, they also won a large library of established characters they could create more projects with. This is something they have appeared keen to take advantage of. Three months ago, we exclusively reported that a live-action Sonic series was in development for Paramount+. This week, Paramount confirmed that news with the announcement of a series for Idris Elba’s Knuckles. Fans are also waiting on Sonic 2, with the third one just confirmed. That’s not all the studio has coming though, and we’re happy to report some information on one more project fans can look forward to in the expanding Sonic cinematic universe. Thanks to a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot, we can report that a Tails movie is in development.
Our source confirmed that the new Tails movie will be in live-action and is a spinoff from the 2020 Sonic The Hedgehog with Jim Carrey. This means that it’s in the same cinematic universe. Could Dr. Ivo Robotnik show up? Knuckles? Sonic? Our source wasn’t able to confirm whether any of the characters from the other movies will be in the Tails spinoff. It would be our bet that Sonic 2 will establish a lot more of the story for Tails and better set up the spinoff movie, but we’ll have to wait to see.
Tails was last seen in the post-credit scene for the 2020 movie. They’re set to appear in the sequel, which isn’t a surprise. In the first post-credit scene, Jim Carrey’s Dr. Ivo Robotnik was shown on a mushroom planet, plotting his inevitable return to earth and attack on Sonic. The next scene showed Tails popping over to earth through a ring portal, ready to find Sonic.
Based on the trailer for Sonic 2, it would appear that Knuckles has been hired by Dr. Robotnik to take down Sonic, who should be teaming up with best friend Tails for a major showdown. It sounds like the studio was won over by Tails in Sonic 2 and they are expecting audiences to feel the same. With so many Sonic projects on the way, it seems unlikely that this will be the last new project announced in the coming months.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is hitting movie theaters on April 8, 2022. That isn’t long from now. We were unable to confirm a release date for the new Tail movie, but did hear that it’s still in development. This likely means that it will be a while yet. It’ll be interesting to see how the upcoming sequel sets up the new spinoff movie, and how it will tie into the upcoming live-action series on Paramount+. With Idris Elba starring in the series, it seems like a project bound to set up an expansive cinematic universe, hopefully one that will tie into the movies.
