J.J. Abrams put his stamp on the Star Trek franchise back in 2009 when he directed the franchise reboot of the series. That iteration of the property extended to two sequels but has been dormant ever since 2016. The franchise has continued on with other television series but the feature films have been put on hiatus. However, recent reports have said that Abrams is coming back to produce a new film in the series. There was no assumption that his involvement would go beyond that, but we have obtained some exclusive information that says the former Star Trek director could be back behind the camera soon.

We reached out to our trusted and proven insider source who was able to discover that Paramount is angling to get J.J. Abrams in the director’s chair once again. We could not place exactly which project he will be helming but the safe money would be on the one he is producing. It seems like there are a number of Star Trek irons in the fire over at Paramount right now, so this could be a continuation of Abrams’s current series of films or a brand new direction for the series.

We have to assume the latter is more likely since getting the crew back from the J.J. Abrams movies is probably going to be more expensive than going with a brand new cast. However, this also could take place in the same alternate timeline that Abrams created in the 2009 movie. We were unable to clarify that as well. All we know is that Paramount seems to want him back in the saddle for a new Star Trek film after he went off to make that other star-focused franchise. Frankly, after the not-so-great reception to Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, it might feel better for Abrams to come back into a series where he was a little more celebrated.

Paramount clearly wants to revive the Star Trek property in feature films, but it sounds like they have yet to commit to one big project. Right now, their main focus has been on pumping out new television series across the board. At the current count, there are five confirmed shows going on in the near future. There are new seasons for Picard, Discovery, and Lower Decks on the way. In addition to that, Strange New Worlds and Progidy will be making their premieres. There is no telling if the new direction for the feature film arm of the franchise will connect to any of these projects, the recent reboot trilogy, or be a completely new take on the material.

Regardless, it sounds like Paramount is determined to get Abrams back for at least one more go-around in the Star Trek universe. Will he say yes? And if so, just what kind of project will he be captaining? We know he’s also busy over at Warner with the new Superman reboot. Will he have time to also direct another adventure in the Star Trek universe? One thing is for sure: Paramount is going to try and get him back.
