Mulan 2 is reportedly in the works at Disney. And that's not all.

Mulan 2 doesn’t immediately seem like the kind of project that would be at the forefront of Disney’s slate of movies. The first film was one of the earliest canceled theatrical releases of the coronavirus pandemic. It ended up premiering on Disney+ through their Premier Access service and internationally in some theaters. As such, it was undoubtedly a loss on the books for Disney. Even though it is estimated that the movie made upwards of $93 million through Disney+, there is no doubt that Disney ended up taking a hit with the movie. However, it sounds like Disney wants to stay with the franchise in a major way. Because Mulan 2 isn’t all they have planned.
According to our trusted inside source – the same one that has provided Giant Freakin Robot with multiple confirmed exclusive scoops that have included the reveal that Bruce Wayne’s parents will be evil in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, Bruce Campbell will appear for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and that Monica Rambeau will be one of the main characters in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion – Mulan 2 is in the works but Disney also wants to make this a trilogy. With that kind of confidence, one has to wonder if the first movie has performed exceptionally well on Disney+ after it became available to all subscribers outside of the Premier Access option. That could be a major motivating factor in Disney wanting to pursue more movies in the franchise.
However, we wonder if it will be worth the energy to really make Mulan 2. The film was not critically beloved and we even called it one of the worst movies of 2020. But more than that, the movie was bogged down by numerous controversies that may have soured a lot of people on any further movies. It got so bad that China began to ban all coverage of the movie. At this point, it is likely that many have forgotten all the issues that surrounded the first movie, but making Mulan 2 could dredge all that up once again, and Disney may have to perform another round of public relations. But, there is no question that Disney wants to maintain a strong presence at the Chinese box office and in the Chinese entertainment market in general. Making another Mulan movie would seem to be a calculated strategy towards maintaining awareness in that part of the world.
Disney certainly seems committed to making sequels out of their live-action remakes. In addition to Mulan 2, we know that The Lion King 2 and Aladdin 2 are both in the works. Disney has managed to hit gold with these live-action remakes and is now on board with spinning them into their own unique franchises. It certainly tracks that they would want to do something similar with Mulan. Again, we would love to know if this is being spurred on by the first film being viewed a whole bunch on Disney+. If that’s the case, will Disney make this a streaming exclusive? Or could it get another Premier Access release like the first film? A lot is up in the air and we will have to see how far along in development Mulan 2 gets.
