As Marvel continues to build out its catalog of movies and series around a variety of different characters, we are sure to get some lesser-known folks in there with certain productions. And they might not always be the good guys either. That’s the nature of the content business these days, and this studio in particular considering they have such a wide variety of characters to draw on. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source is that there is a Mephisto Halloween special in the works and it is set to come to Disney+ for the holiday.
While we don’t have details on casting for the Mephisto Halloween special, which we are told will be a one-off specifically for the holiday, there have been rumors that Giancarlo Esposito was in talks to join the franchise as the character. That has yet to be confirmed, though the timing of these two pieces of news certainly seems to be dovetailing in such a way that more definitive news around casting could come sooner than later.
In terms of the character, Mephisto isn’t someone we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe up until this point, left out of some storylines even though he’d been in those within the pages of comic book stories. One of those was the Thanos-led Infinity Gauntlet comic book series. In the original story, Mephisto was along for the ride as Thanos sought to wipe out half of human existence, though in that story it was simply to impress Death. Marvel changed up that narrative to more fit the Avengers timeline and Mephisto didn’t make the cut. There has been some speculation also that we get at least a reference to the character in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
We have seen Mephisto on the big screen before, though it wasn’t in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character made his way into the Nicolas Cage-led Ghost Rider movies, portrayed by Peter Fonda in the first one and Ciaran Hinds in the second. Those flicks (thankfully) weren’t part of the MCU. Though with the Multiverse now up and running we could at least see a head nod to Hinds’ character. Fonda passed away in 2019.
And in terms of a one-off, holiday-style special, well Mephisto might not be the only character Marvel plans on throwing out there for a more insular story to kick things off. Giant Freakin Robot also had the exclusive a few months ago, which was recently confirmed, that a Man-Thing project was in the works. This one was planned as a Halloween special as well. It would seem that Marvel is going to lean a bit scarier for the holiday on Disney+, likely butting up against some of the more kid-friendly fare that’s been on the streamer since the jump.
In all, adding Mephisto to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and giving the red demon his own special is certainly an interesting choice. And though that special will be a one-and-done, there is certainly a chance we will see more of him in the MCU, especially when Ghost Rider or maybe even the Silver Surfer make their respective ways into the universe.
