Liam Neeson only got to play in the Star Wars sandbox for a very short time after the life of his character, Qui-Gon Jinn, met a tragic fate at the hands of the Sith Lord, Darth Maul, in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Ever since then, fans have been keeping their fingers crossed that the Jedi Master would one day return to the Star Wars universe and that the Taken star would play him once again. Well, it just so happens that we have gotten our hands on some exclusive information that should make fans of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s mentor very happy.
According to our trusted inside source – the same one that has provided Giant Freakin Robot with multiple confirmed exclusive scoops that have included Bruce Campbell appearing for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Chloe Bennet returning as Quake for a new Marvel series – Liam Neeson is in talks to return as Qui-Gon Jinn. Disney is in the early development stage of a series that would focus on the Jedi Master from the first Star Wars prequel. The story would obviously focus on his life prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but our source could not confirm just how large a swath of Qui-Gon Jinn’s backstory would be explored in this proposed series. It is not even clear yet just how much Neeson himself would be featured in the series.
Yes, it is possible that Liam Neeson would not play Qui-Gon Jinn for the entirety of the series. Unless Disney wants to fork out the money to do deepfake de-aging for an entire series – which they could possibly be doing with a Luke Skywalker series – it is possible that they will cast a younger version of Qui-Gon Jinn who would get the bulk of the screen time on the show. Then, Liam Neeson would appear only in either a framing device or as a cameo to show an older Qui-Gon Jinn. But, they could decide to go with Neeson for the whole run of the series. Even though it has been over twenty years since he played the role, he certainly seems as spry as ever and game for anything a project throws his way.
The character of Qui-Gon Jinn still remains one of the best parts of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Liam Neeson’s performance has a lot to do with that. Would fans be open to seeing a younger actor in the part? Or will they only want to see Neeson? The best bet seems to be splitting the difference so that a new actor gets a shot and Neeson also gets to return to the part in order to satiate fans. could we also see Qui-Gon Jinn pop up as a Force ghost in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series? Could that act as a lead-in to this purported Qui-Gon Jinn show?
The Star Wars universe continues to expand under the auspices of Disney. With more of the prequel era being explored in these Disney+ shows, we wonder which of them will take off and get fans and audiences excited. Having Liam Neeson return would definitely get plenty of viewers curious. We will just have to see what happens.
