Exclusive: LEGO Star Wars Feature Film In Development
We are now hearing from a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot that a LEGO Star Wars movie is in development.
Update: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive was confirmed, and LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is premiering on Disney+ on September 13, 2024. Sig Greebling discovers an artifact called the Cornerstone in a hidden Jedi temple and all heck breaks loose. Mark Hamill is back voicing Luke Skywalker in this one.
Do fans need another Star Wars project? Even with the long list of upcoming films out there, the answer is probably always going to be, “Yes.” However, with so many series and movies on the way, Lucasfilm is going to need to get creative if they want to continue expanding their empire. We are now hearing from a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot that a LEGO Star Wars movie is in development.
This project is going to tell an original story for the Star Wars universe. Our source also shared that the LEGO Star Wars movie will include actors from the live-action films voicing their roles.
As Lucasfilm is expanding their cinematic universe, a LEGO Star Wars movie at full length and with voice work from the original live-action actors sounds like a very clear next move for them. It’ll be exciting to see what kind of story they’re planning to tell. The LEGO short Star Wars movies, like The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, used some child-friendly humor and clocked in at about 45 minutes. The movie wasn’t especially memorable, but had some cute LEGO jokes and saw Rey traveling through the Star Wars timeline to revisit major moments. That short movie did bring in Kelly Marie Tran to reprise her role, but stars like Rey used different actors to voice the roles.
Will the new LEGO Star Wars movie solely use the live-action actors for their characters? At what point in the timeline will the movie take place? We were unable to confirm answers to these questions. Of course, many will wonder if this means Mark Hamill will be able to return as Luke Skywalker. He’s voiced the character in animated projects in the past and done voice work for other franchises as well, so he seems like a natural fit. Mark Hamill returned for the animated Star Wars: Forces of Destiny alongside Daisy Ridley as Rey and John Boyega as Finn. Will they reprise their roles for the new LEGO Star Wars movie as well?
It’ll be interesting to see whether Disney and Lucasfilm decide to release the new LEGO Star Wars feature film on Disney+ for streaming or go to the theaters. We were unable to confirm with our source whether they have a firm plan on this or not. Their decision may not be firm until they know their own release date and see how movie theaters are doing at that time.
With the original live-action voice actors on board, a movie theater release is a possibility. Streaming would make a lot of sense though. It seems likely that some of the recent LEGO Star Wars short movies, like LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, must be doing incredibly well on Disney+. With high streaming numbers, they’d be encouraged to release a new project, and bringing in the live-action stars and making it full length will widen the appeal. For now, the project is still in development, but hopefully, they’ll be able to move forward with this one and release more information soon.
