Exclusive: Kurt Russell Is Leading A New Yellowstone Spinoff
Kurt Russell will now lead a Yellowstone spinoff that is set in the present day.
Yellowstone has become a monster that is now taking on a life of its own. We had reported that Kevin Costner would be stepping down from the series and that Matthew McConaughey would be taking over. However, through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that Kurt Russell will now be given his own Yellowstone spinoff that is set in the present day.
It is interesting that Kurt Russell is now going to be part of the Yellowstone universe, as he and Costner were once rivals of the Western genre in the 1990s. Both men led stories about Wyatt Earp, though Tombstone was far more successful than Costner’s Wyatt Earp movie. To be fair, it is not likely that Russell and Costner are going to meet in the Yellowstone spinoff, but that would be amazing if it happened.
What we do know is that this Kurt Russell Yellowstone spinoff is not going to be the upcoming 6666 spinoff that has already been announced by Taylor Sheridan. We are assuming that this story is going to be an offshoot of the existing mainline Yellowstone story. With Costner being replaced, Sheridan might also be wanting to put together several shows that tie in the mainline Yellowstone drama.
Although Kevin Costner is going to be replaced, that still leaves Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, and Cole Hauser. All supporting actors can stake their claim as the new head of the Dutton family, and the show can still go on … literally. Kurt Russell’s new Yellowstone spinoff might tie in nicely with whatever happens when McConaughey comes aboard as well.
Kurt Russell is certainly transitioning from being a mega movie star into more small screen roles lately, as Yellowstone isn’t the only TV series that he is set to be a part of. Russell will also lead the Godzilla and the Titans AppleTV+ series along with his son, Wyatt Russell. We wonder if Wyatt will be joining his father in this new Yellowstone spinoff.
So far, most of the Yellowstone spinoff shows have traveled back in time to show the earlier Dutton families staking their claim in the expansion and growth of the United States. The previously mentioned 6666 spinoff is about the 6666 ranch that has been mentioned in present-day Yellowstone, as it appeared in Seasons 4 and 5, which might not serve as a prequel. Kurt Russell’s Yellowstone spinoff might be something similar, which could tackle present-day issues, though it could showcase some older elements of the franchise.
For now, we can all patiently wait to hear more news about this new era of Yellowstone, which will be moving away from Kevin Costner, but is sure to stay in the realm of the drama laid out by the Dutton family. Kurt Russell’s Yellowstone series might just expand the universe around the Duttons, leaving his part to be completely intertwined in the madness that Sheridan has created. Either way, we are more than excited to see Russell strap on the gun again and get back to one of his best genres.
