Karl Urban is beloved by genre fans thanks to his many roles in science-fiction and action projects like Star Trek, Dredd, The Boys, and many others. He has become a staple of adaptations and has managed to be one of the best elements of many productions. There are a number of roles that fans would love to see the New Zealand actor take on, and now it looks like he could be stepping into the shoes of one of the most beloved and celebrated superhero characters in the history of the medium.
Giant Freakin Robot has managed to obtain some exclusive information from one of our trusted and proven inside sources that Karl Urban is one of the actors being considered by Marvel Studios to take on the role of James Howlett a.k.a. Logan a.k.a. Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Our insider does state that the studio’s first choice for the role is Taron Egerton but that it might not look like they can nab him. Because of that, they are starting to look outward to other actors and Karl Urban is one of their choices.
Now, it should be stated that Karl Urban has already been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok. However, his character died at the end of that film and it seems like quite the waste of an actor like Urban to have him be a one-and-done character. Would audiences even care too much about Urban returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a new character? To be perfectly honest, many casual viewers probably would not even remember him or care. Considering that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has undergone some major recasting in the past with Don Cheadle and Mark Ruffalo replacing Terrence Howard and Edward Norton respectively, it would not be the biggest pill to swallow for audiences.
It would admittedly be wild to see Karl Urban pop the adamantium claws especially since his The Boys co-star Antony Starr has openly stated that he would like to play the role of Wolverine. Urban would undoubtedly be great in the role but he might actually be too recognizable at this point thanks to the massive success of The Boys on Amazon Prime. However, Marvel Studios has made a name for itself by casting notable actors in their major roles. It acts as a form of marketing for the role when a noteworthy actor pops up in one of their projects. They don’t often go the unknown actor route, so having Karl Urban as Wolverine is not out of the realm of possibility.
We have a feeling we are going to start to learn more and more about Marvel’s plans for the X-Men and Wolverine in particular as this next phase of their movies and shows are planning to open up the universe in a major way. Will Karl Urban be a part of those plans? He is certainly in the running and we have to say we would love to see him take a swing at the premier mutant character from the Marvel roster.
