Gina Carano is getting a replacement in Star Wars, but it's not this fan favorite.

Gina Carano was set to star in a new Star Wars series for Disney+ titled Rangers of the New Republic. But, after posting an image that equated the genocide of the Holocaust with divisive political discourse in modern America, Disney decided to cut ties with the actress for good. Now, fans have been wondering what will become of the character Cara Dune and the role she was set to play in Rangers of the New Republic. A rumor started circling that Dune would be replaced by a fan-favorite character, Hera Syndulla, from the animated series Star Wars Rebels. However, we have reached out to our sources to see if we could verify this and we have come back with a very different report.
According to our trusted inside source – the same one that has provided Giant Freakin Robot with multiple confirmed exclusive scoops that have included Bruce Campbell appearing for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Chloe Bennet returning as Quake for a new Marvel series – Gina Carano is not going to be replaced by Hera Syndulla in Rangers of the New Republic. Instead, her replacement will be another human woman and will still be set to lead the show. However, it is not all bad news for fans that were hoping to see Hera Syndulla make the jump to live-action. Our source does say that there are talks about having her featured in the series, but nothing concrete has been nailed down quite yet.
Considering that the plan was originally to have Gina Carano lead Rangers of the New Republic as Cara Dune, you would think that Disney would want a familiar character (or at least actor) in the starring role. The idea would have seemed to be about getting fans of The Mandalorian interested in this new show by anchoring it with a known hero. With the studio still moving forward with a human woman in the lead role, will they choose another known character from the Star Wars canon? Or will they create a brand new character who will mostly be Cara Dune in everything but her name?
There are certainly some possible replacements for Gina Carano’s Cara Dune. Fans have eagerly been anticipating the arrival of Mara Jade, but Rangers of the New Republic does not seem like the right fit for such a character. Granted, she could certainly make her debut in that show, but the nature of her character would not exactly lend itself to the lead role in a film about what will essentially be a space police show. Perhaps we will see another fan-favorite human woman character in the lead, but it is starting to sound like Disney might decide to craft a brand new character to headline the show.
So, while you might be bummed that Hera Syndulla will not be Gina Carano’s replacement, at least take some comfort in the knowledge that she is being discussed for some kind of role in the show. Exactly how prominent that role would be is unclear right now, but we hope she will get to join Ahsoka Tano in making the transition to the world of live-action.
