Exclusive: Dwayne Johnson’s San Andreas 2 Is Finally Happening
Through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that San Andreas 2 with Dwayne Johnson is moving forward.
Update November 2021: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive was confirmed with Dwayne Johnson saying that San Andreas was in development. Hiram Garcia, Johnson’s producing partner at Seven Bucks Productions also confirmed a sequel. But the timing of the movie has not been confirmed.
Dwayne Johnson is a busy man. On top of the many starring ventures he has, his huge tequila company, and buying the XFL, it’s a wonder how he even has time for all the things that he is a part of. While we all patiently wait to see the man suit up as Black Adam in DC, there are many other films that the man is going to be spearheading after that. One of which happens to be a sequel film that many might not have seen coming. Through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that Dwayne Johnson says that San Andreas 2 is happening.
San Andreas is a disaster film that follows the San Andreas Fault shifting in California causing many devastating earthquakes that all but destroy the West Coast. Dwayne Johnson takes on the role of Raymond Gaines, a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter rescue pilot. While going through a divorce with his ex-wife Emma, he must put his grievances aside and save her, along with their daughter who is trapped in San Francisco. Throughout the remained of the film, the destruction by these earthquakes turns the San Francisco Peninsula into an island. Now, we get to see Johnson return as Gaines, and pick up where the destruction of the United States left off. San Andreas 2 could be solely revolved around the Gaines family rebounding from such a massive tragedy.
Despite how silly San Andreas is, the film was a box office hit, making $474 million worldwide box office numbers. The film boasted a cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti, Ioan Gruffudd, and many more. We are not sure if any of these cast members would be returning to the sequel, well, everyone except Gruffudd’s character. He sadly died. Still, if Johnson, Gugino, and Daddario return for San Andreas 2, it would then be about their family rebounding from this tragedy. Also, since Raymond Gaines is a rescue pilot, he could be having to return to the island that was created by the earthquakes to save people. That would also make sense plot-wise.
San Andreas may have been critically panned, as it currently has a poor 48% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film still made a ton of money. That just goes to show that people like to turn their brains off and just watch an entertaining film. Dwayne Johnson knows how to market himself in films like this, and it makes complete sense that San Andreas 2 is now happening. Hopefully, he can get most of the original cast to return for the sequel.
With how busy Dwayne Johnson is, we are not likely to see San Andreas 2 until a few years’ time. His schedule is currently full of new features that will take him through 2023 with ease. We would assume that Johnson would get to work on this film next year, and it would be targeted for a 2024 release. However, with the potential to make a ton of money, it could be pushed up. Either way, it’s time to see Johnson swoop in and save the world yet again. Well, he saved the West Coast at least.
