Chris Evans is one of the few actors to get the chance to play more than one major Marvel character over the course of his career. He got to play Johnny Storm a.k.a. the Human Torch in Fantastic Four and the sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Then, he was drafted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger and the rest is movie history. What else could the star do when it comes to the realm of Marvel superheroes? Well, it turns out that there is yet another character that Chris Evans will be portraying and this is arguably the most beloved Marvel superhero of all time.
We have learned from one of our trusted and proven insider sources that Chris Evans is going to play none other than Spider-Man in the upcoming animated Disney+ series What If…?. Evans will be playing a Spider-Man from another universe though we don’t know what alternate universe version of the character he will be portraying. What is very intriguing is that our source says that there could be an opportunity for Chris Evans to reprise this role in a live-action forum at some point. That is undeniably a wild thing to think about happening, but with everything we know about the multiverse future of Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this actually is not outside of the realm of possibility.
Having Chris Evans show up as Spider-Man in What If…? will definitely be a noteworthy piece of alternate universe casting, but it will also help set up just how nutty this upcoming phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be. And doing so by introducing him through a voice role in an animated series is a smart move. If Chris Evans showed up as Spidey first in live-action, it would be mind-blowing but could be a little too much to handle from the outset. There would be nowhere to go from there since this is very likely planned to be something of a glorified cameo. But, dropping in a Steve Rogers from another world who became Spider-Man in the first official Marvel Cinematic Universe animated series will grab headlines and prep more casual viewers for other insane multiverse appearances in upcoming projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
And after his appearance on What If…?, having Chris Evans pop into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Spider-Man will still be awesome but could also be used to misdirect from some other notable big surprise roles. People going into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might expect Chris Evans as Spider-Man, but that could make him also appearing as Captain Hydra a real shocker. There are so many tricks Marvel could play on the audience thanks to setting up this new performance in What If…?.
It is going to be a blast to hear Chris Evans portray his take on everyone’s favorite wall-crawling superhero, but it would really break the internet if he also showed up in a live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe project as the web-slinger.
