Ewan McGregor has played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise for well over two decades now. But it seems like he’s more than willing to continue to play the role for many years to come. In a recent interview, he talked about reprising the role in a future project, saying, “I hope we get a chance to do another one and I’m sure we will, adding, “I’m pretty sure, you know, I’ve got a few years yet before I’m the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope.”

25 Years Of Obi-Wan

Ewan McGregor first played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode 1 -The Phantom Menace in 1999. Inheriting the role from Alec Guinness, McGregor played a younger version of the Jedi as he apprenticed under the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). The pair of Jedis end up taking on the young Anakin Skywalker as a student, with Skywalker becoming Obi-Wan’s padawan in subsequent films.

Best Part Of The Prequels

Ewan McGregor would continue to play the role of Obi-Wan in the other Star Wars prequel trilogy films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. While the reactions to the prequel trilogy were mixed and even outright maligned by fans, McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan was widely considered a high point of the trilogy. Fans have softened to the films years later, which undoubtedly played a part in McGregor and Hayden Christensen returning to their roles all these years later.

Reprising Their Roles

Both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprised their roles as Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader, respectively, for the Disney+ Star Wars miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show takes place after the events of Revenge of the Sith and shows Obi-Wan coming out of exile to help rescue a young Princess Leia from the Empire. This leads to Kenobi crossing paths with his old apprentice Anakin, now Darth Vader.

While reactions to Obi-Wan Kenobi were relatively mixed, fans did enjoy seeing Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen’s Anakin/Vader face off again. Both actors have expressed their extreme interest in reprising the roles again, possibly for a second season, but it seems like Lucasfilm and Disney are currently undecided on that front.

He’ll Be Back

The ending of Obi-Wan Kenobi certainly left the door open for more adventures for Obi-Wan between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. The two films take place nearly 20 years apart, and that’s a pretty long time to just sit there watching a kid grow up on a desert planet. There’s a lot of room for Ewan McGregor to return for more stories in the Star Wars universe, and fans would likely be open to seeing that if it’s done right.

Even if we don’t get to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Obi-Wan again anytime soon, there are plenty of other big Star Wars projects on the horizon. The rest of 2024 will see the release of the Disney+ shows Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte, and Tales of the Jedi. We can also look forward to Star Wars returning to the big screen with The Mandalorian & Grogu and the Daisy Ridley-starring film in the near future.
