Star Wars fans have more than a few reasons to be excited with all of the developments and new projects coming from the franchise. In the next few years, there are going to be totally new stories around up-and-coming characters as well as a return to some of the favorites from the past. Where the latter is concerned, it won’t be all that long until we get Ewan McGregor back as Obi-Wan Kenobi and the limited series has just started filming. With it came some first looks at McGregor on the set, courtesy of Just Jared, and gives an idea of some potential storylines and scenes.
The photos of Ewan McGregor are from a distance and involve him walking around the set of Obi-Wan Kenobi. He’s wearing a black robe in almost all of them which is covering up his costume. But in a couple of them, you can see different elements poking through and there’s clearly him wearing a Stormtrooper outfit on set. How this fits in with the story is anyone’s guess, though it would point to at least a few scenes of Obi-Wan infiltrating some Galactic Empire military unit.
In a few other pictures, Ewan McGregor looks like he’s wearing the long sleeve undergarment for Obi-Wan’s tunic. This is likely the more often used costume for the character, something we saw him wear during the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The return to the character is an exciting turn of events for the franchise, something that didn’t seem all that possible just a few years ago. But with more storylines being fleshed out, this series is set up to fill in some major gaps from the original movies.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to pick up after the events of Episode III – The Revenge of the Sith and before Episode IV – A New Hope. It will detail the story of Kenobi and his time on Tatooine with the express goal of making sure he’s there to protect Luke as the latter comes of age. While specific plot details aren’t known, we can be nearly certain there’s plenty of conflict here and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan is set to likely go above and beyond to make sure Luke stays safe. If this means impersonating a Stormtrooper then so be it.
And we also know that Ewan McGregor isn’t the only one returning from that prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen is set to reprise his Darth Vader role as well. It stands to reason these two come face-to-face again in some fashion, with the possibility being the entire story arc works to that moment. How much time the series covers isn’t quite known, but it’s likely to stay within a moderately short window during this time considering but the time A New Hope came around Kenobi had become something of a recluse.
Other notables in the cast joining Ewan McGregor will be Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse who will play Luke’s adoptive parents, Owen and Beru Lars. And beyond that the cast is stacked for this Disney+ series. There will be Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Rupert Friend, Indira Varma, and O’Shea Jackson Jr among many others. We do know that Liam Neeson won’t be reprising his Qui Gon Jinn character though. Some had speculated he’d find his way back into the story, but Neeson dispelled those rumors.
The six-episode series will release on the streaming platform sometime in 2022 and marks just another in the many Star Wars projects underway right now. Getting Ewan McGregor back as th iconic character is such a cool turn events, something that seemed impossible until recently.
