Finally after what feels like an infinity of waiting, fans have a release date for Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The show is set to pick up 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith as Obi-Wan makes himself Luke Skywalker’s protector and lives in the dunes of Tatooine. CBR has reported that fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see one of the most famous Jedi knights as Obi-Wan Kenobi will be making his comeback this spring. May is of course the month of the heralded Star Wars day. May 4th is a play on “may the force be with you” and there is no better time to see Ewan McGregor reprise the iconic role. It has not been confirmed if May 4th is the exact date of release, but having a tentative release window of May is good enough.
The show simply titled Obi-Wan Kenobi has been a source of conjecture for some time. Ewan McGregor could not contain his excitement when the news first broke about the television series. When speaking to Empire, the actor stated, “I’m more excited about doing this one than I was doing the second and third one that we did before.” McGregor is referring to the often divisive nature of the Star Wars prequels. The trilogy starring Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman did not initially premiere with critical acceptance. The films had been denounced for stilted acting and uncomfortable dialogue (via Indie Wire).
Ewan McGregor himself stated that he was shocked when the prequels started getting more attention in recent years (via The Guardian). The trilogy has seen a new renaissance with fans revisiting the films and being kinder to them. The actor admitted how difficult it was when the films were critically disregarded. He has gone on to say that some aspects of the process were difficult to film. But McGregor’s reaction isn’t to say that he didn’t enjoy the entire experience. In fact one of his most touching revelations was reuniting with Christensen who is confirmed to appear as Darth Vader (via Looper).
This has garnered some criticism from some sticklers for the original trilogy. Many have called into question how it is possible that Obi-Wan and Darth Vader could interact at this time in the Jedi knight’s life. When the former master and apprentice meet in Star Wars: A New Hope, the implication is that the two have not seen each other since Vader turned to the dark side. Creatives have teased that there will be a lightsaber fight and that it was impossible not to address Anakin as he was a large part of Obi-Wan’s story. Ewan McGregor and Christensen can be seen dueling in recent press releases.
Christensen will not just be appearing alongside his old costar Ewan McGregor. The actor is also slated to appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series. This is also a meaningful connection as Ahsoka Tano first appeared as Anakin’s apprentice in The Clone Wars animated series. Her story continued in the follow up Rebels, considered to be one of the best Star Wars properties (via Looper). This is where she and Vader came head to head as she tries to avenge Anakin’s demise. Ahsoka has not just limited to animated television. Her first live-action appearance was portrayed by Rosario Dawson in The Mandalorian and she will be teaming back up with old friend Sabine in her self-titled series. This is truly the golden age of Star Wars content and McGregor is proud to bring another chapter of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
