2022 may well be known by historians as the year of defamation lawsuits, especially relating to those defendants and plaintiffs that were in romantic entanglements with one another. Much of the first half of the year saw a very public trial between actors Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard, contesting abusive actions and monetary gain. In that specific trial, Depp exited victorious, with Heard required to pay her ex-spouse over $8 million. Both of their public personas have been tarnished, and their careers affected to different degrees. In a similar but ongoing lawsuit, actor Evan Rachel Wood has found herself part of a defamation case with ex-fiancee Marilyn Manson that might become high profile enough to grab public attention.

According to a report by RadarOnline, Evan Rachel Wood has asked the judge in her defamation case to dismiss Marilyn Manson’s requests to the court, which could possibly dismiss the case altogether. Manson has apparently decided to depose the Westworld actor due to a hunch that Wood may have drafted a damning FBI letter in order to fabricate abuse allegations against the singer. Wood’s attorney doesn’t see a valid reason for her client to be deposed and has asked the judge to hear Wood’s side before deciding what to do next.

Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson dated for several years in the mid-2000s in an on-again-off-again relationship that finally ended with a broken engagement in 2010. Since then, Wood accused Manson of abuse during their relationship, as reported by BBC News. Prior to the abuse allegations, Wood had made it public knowledge that she was previously raped and was a survivor of domestic abuse but hadn’t mentioned the perpetrator by name. She finally came clean that Manson orchestrated the abuse, which sparked the defamation case she currently finds herself embroiled in.

For his part, Marilyn Manson has denied that any abuse of Evan Rachel Wood ever took place, despite similar claims from other women. According to Billboard, up to sixteen women have come forward in recent years with similar allegations of abuse against Manson, and have made their voices heard through social media. Due to the loud response from many of his alleged victims, Manson was dropped by his label, Loma Vista Recordings, as well as his longtime manager Tony Ciulla and CAA. In a move that may help Wood’s side of the argument, several celebrities have come to her defense, including musician Phoebe Bridgers who called out Manson for his behavior towards her when she was a teenage fan of his.

One thing is certain about the defamation case between Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson in that it somehow keeps the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial in the news. Depp and Heard are continuing their legal battles with an attempt to appeal their own cases. Just last week, Deadline reported that texts have been uncovered relating to the Depp and Heard case which provide off-color remarks by Manson and Depp towards their exes in an apparent attempt to justify their alleged behavior. Manson and Depp have been friends for years, with Manson named as the godfather to Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp.
