Marvel has a number of cool productions on the way and they’ve added a whole host of stars as new characters in the universe. These days, joining the Marvel ranks doesn’t necessarily mean coming in on the hero side of things. There are plenty of villains out there as well, with big names in possibly sinister parts. One of those is going to be Ethan Hawke who’s taken a big role in the upcoming series Moon Knight on Disney+. While we know that he is going to play the primary antagonist in the show, the exact role has remained something of a mystery. That is, possibly, until now. In the latest tease for Moon Knight, we might have gotten a huge clue about who Ethan Hawke is playing from the comic book pages.

The clue about Ethan Hawke came in the form of an official description for the series (via Comicbook.com) that gives a bit of insight into the overall plot of the show. While it looks like the Moon Knight character, played by Oscar Isaac, will go through the standard origin story, the villain might be someone who only hit the comic book pages relatively recently.

In the Moon Knight description, it says, “A new globetrotting action-adventure series featuring a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt.” It’s this last line that had folks perk their ears up considerably about Ethan Hawke’s character.

Though Moon Knight is embued with powers going from the Egyptian god Khonshu, not everyone he is at odds with has backgrounds in the god-like realm. For instance, it was speculated for some time that Ethan Hawke would be playing Raoul Bushman, the mercenary that Marc Spector had worked with prior to getting his powers. But this latest description makes it appear that won’t be the case with some other clues leading to Ethan Hawke’s character actually being Sun King, someone who came at odds with Moon Knight only recently. In the comic books, Bushman is actually a reason Sun King is unleashed on the world, with the character a mental patient who is a conduit to the Sun God Ra.

Beyond the piece in which the struggle in Moon Knight will be between the gods (Sun and Moon), there had been reporting for months now that Ethan Hawke was drawing the inspiration for his character from cult leader David Koresh. A disturbing piece for sure, but this didn’t line up at all with him playing Bushman or maybe someone like Dracula. This latter piece had some speculation a couple of weeks ago when that rumor made its rounds. Neither would lend themselves to a cult leader, but Sun King would considering that character did form a cult of his own in the Moon Knight stories. Another rumor had him possibly playing Bertrand Crawley, but that wouldn’t line up totally either.

Again, this is all still conjecture at this point with internet sleuthing being the basis for figuring out Ethan Hawke’s role in Moon Knight. That being said, this latest piece feels like the closest we have gotten to the “truth” around his role. It won’t be all that long now until we find out. Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke are set to make their debut in Moon Knight sometime in early 2022. The series, much like others in the Marvel Universe on Disney+, will consist of six episodes.
