TV Legends Fall For Each Other In Criminally Underrated Hulu Rom-Com

By TeeJay Small | Published

These days, classic romantic comedies seem few and far between, with occasional outings like Anyone But You cropping up as a means to smash two budding A-listers together like a set of Barbie and Ken dolls. Despite the waning popularity of the genre, some rom-coms are so classic that they still draw in new audiences today. One such movie is 2013’s Enough Said, starring Seinfeld‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus and The Sopranos‘ James Gandolfini, which is currently streaming on Hulu.

For those unfamiliar with the film, Enough Said is a sort of all-grown-up version of the traditional rom-com and doesn’t rely on any sophomoric teenage love tropes. The film centers on a pair of middle-aged divorcees who happen to meet and hit it off in a chance encounter despite their overlapping social circles.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays Eva, a massage therapist and mother to a distant teen, while James Gandolfini portrays Albert, a sensitive, vulnerable man who doesn’t at all resemble Tony Soprano.

A Chance Meeting

Eva and Albert are introduced to each other early in the narrative of Enough Said after they both attend a party thrown by a pair of mutual friends.

During the party, Eva also hits it off with a woman named Marianne, who agrees to book a massage from Eva the following week.

Despite Eva’s initial reservations about Albert, as he’s not physically her usual type, she agrees to go on a date with him after he gets her number from one of the other partygoers.

From there, Eva is horrified to stumble into the realization that Albert is Marianne’s ex-husband. Despite the awkward interpersonal situation, Eva continues seeing Albert and growing closer to Marianne as friends, all while pretending that she doesn’t know they were once intimate.

An Awkward But Sweet Premise

In fact, as the plot of Enough Said approaches a fever pitch, she even tries to prod Marianne for information about Albert in order to avoid any pitfalls in her own relationship.

In a sense, Enough Said offers a very Seinfeld-esque approach to a rom-com, as this awkward romance definitely seems like the kind of thing that might happen to George or Elaine on the famed sitcom.

Still, the film retains its sense of self and offers a ton of heart, making it a truly memorable outing. Enough Said serves as one of James Gandolfini’s final credited performances before his untimely death in 2013, and serves as his first posthumous credit, as the film premiered just a few months after his passing.

The Real James Gandolfini?

Close friends of Gandolfini have since expressed that the character of Albert in Enough Said is actually much more like the real-life actor than his famed portrayal of Tony Soprano.

Gandolfini’s The Sopranos co-star Michael Imperioli even explained that he couldn’t bear to watch the film as it broke his heart to be reminded of his long-time friend and colleague.

Critics went absolutely wild for Enough Said upon release, and today the film touts a near-perfect 95 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes to prove it.

While JLD and Gandolfini’s leading performances serve as major highlights, the film’s extended cast also do an excellent job, including Toni Collette, Jessica St. Clair, Ben Falcone, and Get Out’s Catherine Keener.
