Emma Stone To Play This Superhero

Emma Stone is a woman of many talents. Her capacity for both comedy and drama know no bounds. It is somewhat surprising that such a radiant and compelling presenc esuch as her has not been tapped to headline a superhero franchise. Well, if a new rumor is true, she might be finally slipping into some superhero spandex. And what is doubly surprising is that it would be in a role she has played before.
Insider Daniel Richtman (via We Got This Covered) is reporting that Emma Stone might be returning to the role of Gwen Stacy that she played in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. She would be appearing in Sony/Marvel Studios’ upcoming production of Spider-Man 3, which will have a different title in the vein of the previous films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. In a delightful turn, she would actually be appearing as Spider-Gwen, the superhero alter ego of Gwen Stacy in certain iterations of the character.
There is a lot to pick apart with this particular rumor. We have known for a while that Spider-Man 3 would be engaging in some multiverse shenanigans, and that got some serious confirmation when it was announced that Jamie Foxx would be returning as Electro in the new movie. Now, it sounds like Emma Stone could also be getting the opportunity to return as Gwen Stacy, but there is a big elephant in the room that her appearance is going to have to deal with.
What could that be? The fact that Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy was dead at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Since Spider-Man 3 is going to be traversing the multiverse and multiple incarnations of the wall-crawler, could it be that Emma Stone will be appearing as a Gwen Stacy from a totally alternate universe that has no direct connection to the one we see in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
That would seem to be the right approach to take with Emma Stone returning as Gwen Stacy. In the comic book canon and the storyline of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Spider-Gwen version of Gwen Stacy comes from a universe where she was the one who gained spider-themed powers and she was unable to save her best friend, Peter Parker, from dying. This is the version of the character that most audiences are now familiar with, so it stands to reason that the studio would want to bring that take on the character to any live-action iteration.
It is clear that Marvel Studios and Sony see the value in bringing in Emma Stone as Spider-Gwen. Thanks to the immense popularity of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Gwen has become more beloved than ever. And fans have clearly honed in on the idea that Stone could embody a new version of the character that might make up for the less-than-enthusiastic response she received in both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Emma Stone showing up in Spider-Man 3 would certainly get fans excited, especially if it could signal her return to a live-action version of the character in another project. Sony definitely wants to expand their library of Spider-Man related films since they are able to develop those spinoffs under their own banner as opposed to falling more directly under the Marvel Studios umbrella. Sony gets to reap the profits from those movies while Marvel gets the benefit of being able to utilize Spider-Man and his library of characters in their films.
If this rumor ends up being true, it will surely start another wave of rumors regarding Emma Stone returning to the role of Spider-Gwen in any future movies. The character is an exceptionally fun and fascinating one, so we here at Giant Freakin Robot would love to see this all come to fruition. Until then, we will just have to wait and see what shakes out as truth once Spider-Man 3 starts to officially reveal its secrets to us. Whatever does come to pass, it sounds like this will be one of the most game-changing entries in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe canon.
