Look, you basically need some kind of visual board in your living room to keep track of all the characters, actors, actresses, movies, and timelines in the superhero genre these days. And sometimes, you need a chart just for a specific movie. That’s gearing up to be the case for Spider-Man: No Way Home which is bringing characters from all over the franchise. But one actress who starred in a crucial role won’t be returning for this next movie. Emma Stone has said she isn’t involved in reprising her role as Gwen Stacy.
Emma Stone was talking to MTV News during a promotional spot for her upcoming Cruella role. She was asked if she’d be coming back as Gwen Stacy in the next Spider-Man movie. The actress making at least a cameo had been part of the rumor mill for some time. Basically, everyone who’s ever taken part in the franchise at any point in the last two decades has been discussed as coming back into the mix. But Stone made it pretty clear she isn’t going to come back and left little doubt with her response.
When asked about the part Emma Stone said, “I have heard those rumors. I don’t know if I’m supposed to say anything, but I’m not (involved). I don’t know what you’re supposed to respond as an alumnus. ”
These words from Emma Stone don’t sound like someone being evasive or trying to head fake around the possibility of her returning. This sounds totally definitive, making sure she’s working in the idea that she’s heard the rumors herself and also being a bit unsure if she’s contractually able to even answer the question. But she does and lets it be known that she isn’t involved in this next movie. It’s a shame considering it would have been nice to know her Gwen Stacy character was, you know, alive somewhere in the universe.
Emma Stone played Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man as well as the sequel with Andrew Garfield in the starring role. But she fell to her death in the final scenes of the second movie. It was a tragic moment, of course spelling the end of her time in the franchise. But now we have the Multiverse people and that’s opened up the possibility of all kinds of characters returning for this next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland.
Though Emma Stone won’t be coming back, plenty of other folks are getting back into the mix for this next movie. We’ve had some major news on the villain front with the word that Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/ The Green Goblin will be the primary villain in the likely formation of the Sinister Six. That will include at least Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octopus as well as Michael Keaton as Vulture. There’s also talk that Kraven the Hunter could appear as well with Aaron Taylor-Johnson being cast in that role for Sony.
As for Emma Stone, she’s set to star in the aforementioned Cruella which will be a new take on the 101 Dalmatians antagonist. This will be something of an origin story for the character, giving some background on her beginnings as a threat to those pups. Just no Gwen Stacy reuniting with Peter Parker in some way which is a shame. That would have been a fun story arc.
