Emily Blunt’s Star-Studded CIA Movie Is Trending On Streaming
Sicario, the star-studded Mexican cartel thriller featuring Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin, is now trending on Amazon Prime.
According to FlixPatrol, the fantastic 2015 Emily Blunt vehicle Sicario is currently in Amazon Prime Video’s top ten this week. If you love prestige thrillers that touch on real-world issues, you’re going to love this movie. It has excellent direction, a top-notch cast, and a thrilling story to boot.
Emily Blunt leads Sicario as an FBI agent who is called up by CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) to join a special task force to take down a Mexican cartel boss. Along with Blunt and Brolin, the film stars Benicio del Toro as the morally ambiguous Alejandro Gillick, Daniel Kaluuya, Victor Garber, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Donovan, Raoul Trujillo, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Hank Rogerson, Bernardo Saracino, Maximiliano Hernandez, and Edgar Arreola. The film is directed by the always great Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by a pre-Yellowstone Taylor Sheridan.
All of these ingredients mix together to make this one of Emily Blunt’s best films, one that not only was critically lauded but also exceeded expectations at the box office. The film was projected to make $8–10 million on its opening weekend and managed to pull in $12.1 million instead. Overall, the film grossed $84.9 million against a production budget of approximately $30 million.
Unsurprisingly, Sicario got fantastic reviews, with a current score on Rotten Tomatoes of 92%. The performances of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro were widely praised, and the film even ended up grabbing several nominations at the Academy Awards that year. It was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing, though it didn’t take home any of them.
Although Emily Blunt didn’t return, a sequel titled Sicario: Day of the Soldado was released in 2018 with Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Raoul Trujillo reprising their roles, and Isabela Merced, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener joining the cast. Taylor Sheridan returned to write the screenplay, though Villeneuve was unable to return as director and was replaced by Stefano Sollima. The film did fairly well at the box office and has decent reviews, but it didn’t quite live up to the original.
Regardless, success is success in Hollywood, and there’s currently a third film in the works titled Sicario: Capos. There’s not a ton of news about the threequel at this time, but hopefully, they’ll bring back Emily Blunt and Denis Villeneuve to help recreate the magic of the original. As of 2021, the film was announced to still be in development, so we’ll just have to wait to hear more news about it.
Since appearing in Sicario in 2015, Emily Blunt’s career has been going as well as ever. She found a massive hit horror franchise with the A Quiet Place films, appeared as Mary Poppins, and starred in Disney’s Jungle Cruise. We’ll be seeing her soon in the next prestige drama from Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer.
In the meantime, you can head over to Amazon Prime Video and check out Emily Blunt’s top-notch performance in Sicario. The sequel is also available to watch if you have a Starz subscription. Stay tuned for more of the top streaming films on Amazon and other platforms.
