Emily Blunt Wants to Make Edge Of Tomorrow 2 On One Condition
Emily Blunt is willing to return for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, provided her costume is easier to wear.
Rumors regarding a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow have been swirling for nearly a decade. In a recent interview with Deadline, Emily Blunt discussed whether there was still a possibility of a sequel and the potential reprisal of her role from the 2014 action movie. While she expressed enthusiasm for the follow-up, she specified that her involvement would be contingent on the use of a more comfortable costume, mitigating the back issues she experienced while shooting the first movie.
Emily Blunt expressed her interest in participating in another installment by stating, “I would love to do another one.” She admitted uncertainty about the sequel’s timing and logistics but conveyed her readiness to seize the opportunity. However, she voiced concern, saying, “I don’t know if my back could take it.”
Despite the discomfort caused by her costume, Emily Blunt recalled the exhilaration she felt during the film’s production. She shared, “I loved the experience so much, and I would love to work with Doug [Liman] again.” She also emphasized the necessity of ensuring the sequel should be as ambitious as its predecessor.
Edge of Tomorrow centers around a dystopian future where Earth is under attack by an alien species. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an inexperienced military officer who, after being killed in combat, finds himself trapped in a time loop that forces him to relive the brutal battle and his death over and over again. Emily Blunt plays a hardened war hero, Rita Vrataski, who teams up with Cage, helping him understand and leverage his peculiar situation to strategize a plan to defeat the alien invaders.
While slightly underperforming financially, with $370 million in global earnings against a budget of $178 million, Edge of Tomorrow enjoyed substantial success with Blu-ray and DVD sales. In 2021, director Doug Liman expressed to Collider his belief that a sequel would materialize if stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt agreed to return. Although both actors have indicated openness to reprising their roles, an official sequel announcement has yet to be made.
Given the bustling nature of her acting career, it’s likely Emily Blunt doesn’t have much spare time to contemplate the potential of another Edge of Tomorrow installment. She has half a dozen projects in her pipeline, including Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated biographical drama Oppenheimer. Blunt will play Kitty Oppenheimer in the forthcoming picture, which delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American scientist, illustrating his crucial contribution to the creation of the atomic bomb.
The star-studded cast of the Oppenheimer, in addition to Emily Blunt, features a lineup of renowned actors such as Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Josh Hartnett, Gary Oldman, and Rami Malek. Christopher Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin. The film is currently in post-production and scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 21.
Further out, Emily Blunt will headline the crime drama Pain Hustlers, slated for release on October 27. In the film, she plays a high-school dropout and mother to a young daughter who dreams of a better life and manages to secure a job at a struggling pharmaceutical start-up located in a worn-out strip mall in Central Florida. With charm, courage, and ambition, she propels herself and the company into a world of success, only to discover she’s become embroiled in a lethal criminal conspiracy.
