It’s been almost a month since it was announced that Emilia Clarke had signed on to the Marvel Studio’s Secret Invasion series. Even though her exact role hadn’t been revealed, fans were thrilled by the news. Now, according to Beyond the Trailer host Grace Randolph, it seems like the popular actress will be portraying Agent Abigail Brand, a spy who works her way up through the ranks of S.W.O.R.D.
In a recent interview with Comic Book, the Star Wars alum opened up about her casting by explaining why she decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Emilia Clarke shared her admiration for the franchise, saying it was the people behind the project that drew her toward it.
“I just think what they’re doing right now is so exciting and so cool, and so on the cutting edge of it. I feel like they’re like the Apple of this world,” Emilia Clarke explained. “To be part of that family feels like, ‘Oh my god, I’m in the cool kid crowd. That’s so cool.’ Honestly speaking, the people that are making this are what pushed me over the line to want to do it. I just think that everyone’s heart and heads are in the right place with this one.”
There’s no doubt that acclaimed actress Emilia Clarke’s casting leveled up the hype around the Disney+ series.
Secret Invasion will see Emilia Clarke play a part in a loose adaptation of the Secret Invasion comic book created by Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales, and Laura Martin. The story follows the long-term invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a group of alien shape-shifters who have secretly replaced many superheroes in the Marvel Universe with impostors in the years before the invasion.
The series will be led by Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay Samuel L. Jackson who will reprise his role as Nick Fury for the twelfth time. He will be joined by Captain Marvel‘s Ben Mendelsohn who is returning as Talos, the pseudo-leader of the Skrulls. We have to imagine that Emilia Clarke will also have a prominent recurring role and could end up being one of the most important supporting characters in the cast.
Joining Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Emilia Clarke are, Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami) as the series’ main villain, Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Crown), Killian Scott (Dublin Murders), and Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), with Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts) recently rumored to be in negotiations to join the series.
Filming is expected to begin in late 2021 in the United Kingdom and Europe. Kyle Bradstreet will serve as head writer for the series, with Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim set to direct. Secret Invasion is set to premiere in 2022 and will consist of six episodes.
The series was first announced during Disney’s Investors Day event last December along with a slew of other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects including What If?, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Armor Wars, Ironheart, and more.
For Emilia Clarke, who gained an entire galaxy of adoring fans after her role in Solo: A Star Wars story, working in the realm of comics is the next step in a lifelong love of that world. The self-described fangirl also made her comic book debut when her alter ego Qi’ra, returned to the franchise in Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters. The 34-part series follows Boba Fett, who loses Han Solo’s carbonite-frozen body after The Empire Strikes Back, but finds it in time for Jabba the Hutt to flaunt him as a trophy in Return of the Jedi.
