Elizabeth Olsen Scarlet Witch Return Gets An Answer
Ever since Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, MCU fans haven’t seen the Scarlet Witch. Despite the character’s highly successful Wandavision spinoff Agatha All Along premiering this month, there has been no indication when–or if–this witchy woman will come back. Now, Elizabeth Olsen has broken the silence about her Marvel return, stating, “if there’s a good way to use her I’m always happy to come back.”
Marvel Has No Idea How To Handle Her Character
In this case, though, the actor’s willingness to jump back into this sprawling cinematic universe may not be enough to bring the Scarlet Witch back. According to Elizabeth Olsen, Marvel seemed unsure of what to do with her character after WandaVision, which makes her potential return that much more difficult. There is also another complication that many fans may not be aware of: her character is currently quite dead in the MCU.
Came Down With A Terminal Case Of Dead
Scarlet Witch is the Big Bad in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but she has a redemptive moment at the end of the movie, when she sacrifices herself to destroy both the Darkhold and Darkhold Castle. The relative ambiguity of her fate left some fans thinking she was still alive (the first rule of superhero movies is that no body means they aren’t really dead), but both the book Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline and the final trailer for Agatha All Along have confirmed her death. Elizabeth Olsen’s Marvel return, then, would most likely require a resurrection.
Potential Agatha Shenanigans
Of course, with a magical character like Scarlet Witch, such a resurrection isn’t out of the question, and some in the fandom are hoping that Agatha All Along will plant some seeds that might lead to her character coming back to life. If so, it’s possible that Elizabeth Olsen is playing coy about her Marvel character making a return, possibly as early as in this upcoming show. However, from our perspective, it seems like she is right on the money regarding the architects of the MCU keeping her out of the picture because they don’t really know what to do with her character after Wandavision.
WandaVision Is The Best Of The MCU
The primary reason that show is the most popular Disney+ MCU show is that it gave us something this franchise isn’t exactly known for: a nuanced and emotional story centered around a single character. The show beautifully explores Scarlet Witch’s grief at the death of Vision, and that grief leads her to create a kind of pocket reality, complete with her own happy family. The loss of that fake family was meant to motivate the character’s heel turn in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but it was frustrating for audiences and Olsen herself that she was made into a one-dimensional villain.
Fans Are Losing Hope
Because of that, we definitely believe that Elizabeth Olsen won’t be reprising her character unless Marvel can find a good way to use the character after her return. She obviously wants more of the solid writing she had in WandaVision and less of the CGI-driven slopfest she got in Multiverse of Madness. Sadly, though, getting modern Marvel writers to put in the kind of effort they once did may require a bigger magical spell than even Scarlet Witch can cast.
