Elizabeth Olsen Is Done With Marvel And For A Good Reason
Elizabeth Olsen doesn't seem to care about ever returning to Marvel, as she's happy with how her character's story last ended.
Elizabeth Olsen went full-on villain mode when we saw her last as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but she ended up being a hero in the end. With the semi-definitive end to the character, which leaves her open to coming back, fans have wondered if we might see her in another MCU project. In a recent Variety Actors on Actors interview with Meghann Fahy, Olsen was asked if she missed playing Wanda, to which she replied, “No, I don’t,” adding, “I think the reason why I am not calling Kevin Feige everyday with ideas is because I’m really proud of what we were able to do.”
It makes a lot of sense that Elizabeth Olsen wouldn’t want to come back to Marvel if she feels like she left her character in a really good place. As she points out, she has played Wanda for nearly a decade, and her character went through a lot, leading to what many could consider a satisfying ending. Olsen goes on to say that she’s ready to immerse herself in other projects, saying, “And I really am just trying to figure out how to load up other films and characters, so it becomes less about the Marvel of it all.”
Elizabeth Olsen saying that she’s ready to play other characters isn’t surprising at all, as this is one of the top considerations for actors who are offered a Marvel role. While playing a major role in the MCU can undoubtedly be exciting, there comes a point where an actor doesn’t want to keep playing the same character over and over. It’s why we’ve seen actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans move on after being a part of the franchise since nearly the beginning.
With all that being said, Elizabeth Olsen has never shut down the possibility of returning to Marvel completely. In fact, she has previously said that she wants to see Wanda get “some redemption” and that she would love to see them incorporate more “humor” with the character. That also makes a lot of sense, considering Scarlet Witch has almost always been a very serious character from the start, whereas other characters have a lot more chances to be quippy and humorous in comparison.
Elizabeth Olsen has been pretty dodgy about admitting whether or not she has a return to Marvel already planned for one of the studio’s upcoming projects. There has been plenty of speculation that Wanda Maximoff could make a return in the upcoming Disney+ series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which follows Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness character that was first introduced in WandaVision. Since the two characters are so connected, this would certainly make a lot of sense as Scarlet Witch’s next MCU appearance.
We’ll find out whether or not Elizabeth Olsen is returning in Marvel’s Agatha: Coven of Chaos when the series hits Disney+ later this year. Even if she doesn’t make an appearance here, it’s never wise to count out a character completely in the MCU unless Marvel confirms they’re never coming back. We’ll just have to wait and see if Scarlet Witch will continue being a part of the MCU going forward or if Olsen is truly done with her superhero career.
