Elden Ring Movie Or Series Adaptation Teased By George R.R. Martin
Elden Ring has proven to be one of the most popular games of this generation of consoles, and part of that success comes from A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the worldbuilding for the game. And it is now looking like the fascinating lore of Elden Ring might be getting an on-screen adaptation as well. Martin has shared that he has heard rumblings of interest in turning the game into a movie or TV show.
Martin Is Stirring The Pot
Martin plays coy about the topic which he addressed in his latest blog post. Concerning Elden Ring, Martin wrote, “Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring… I have nothing to say.” But Martin did indeed have a few more things to say that certainly hinted at some news brewing. “Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”
Martin has tried in recent years not to get fans’ hopes up about anything he may be involved in after infamously being so bad at estimating how much longer it would take him to finish A Song of Ice and Fire. But his words regarding Elden Ring are clearly a tease indicating that there might be something to the rumors about an on-screen adaptation.
FromSoftware Wants To Adapt Elden Ring
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the chief of the studio behind Elden Ring, FromSoftware, was far more willing to discuss the topic without beating around the bush. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example,” he said. “But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium.”
Miyazaki made it clear that they would need a partner to handle an on-screen adaptation of Elden Ring, and it would have to be someone he found trustworthy. He expressed caution, saying he wanted there to be agreement on what the movie or show would be aiming to do. Shows like The Witcher or Halo have gotten a great deal of criticism for veering far away from their source material. Clearly, Miyazaki does not want his game’s title to become a mere branding tool to lure audiences in for a completely unrelated story.
The Story Is Subtext
Movie adaptations of video games are notoriously difficult to get right, often struggling to straddle the line between appeasing the original fanbase while also making the film accessible to a general audience with no knowledge of the games. Elden Ring would likely be particularly tricky to adapt as so much of its story occurs in subtext within the game’s lore.
A Massive Fanbase
Then, it is also hard to imagine how the story of Elden Ring might translate to the screen, as the game is incredibly nonlinear. It is also heavily reliant on the appeal of its challenge, like FromSoftware’s other games, much of what players enjoy about it is how difficult it is to overcome the game’s enemies and bosses.
However, there is no denying a very passionate fanbase for Elden Ring who would likely be very excited to see it turned into a show or movie. The game’s recent downloadable content, Shadow of the Erdtree, has received rave reviews and sold over five million copies in just three days.
Interest In An Adaption
If the story of Elden Ring were adapted to the screen, it would be hard to imagine how George R.R. Martin would have time to help with it. Even with Game of Thrones Martin eventually had to become more hands-off with the show as he struggled to balance helping the show while also making progress with his books.
From Martin and Miyazaka’s comments, there is clearly interest in adapting Elden Ring. It is unclear if anything is already moving forward, but fans are already excited.
