Exclusive: Eddie Murphy 48 Hrs Sequel With Kevin Hart Attached
Between this, Coming 2 America, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, we’re wondering when we’ll hear about The Golden Child 2. That’s because our trusted and proven sources have revealed that Eddie Murphy is returning to the role of Reggie Hammond for another sequel to 1982’s buddy cop action comedy 48 Hrs. Kevin Hart is attached to co-star and Craig Brewer is in talks to direct the threequel.
We’ve exclusively learned Eddie Murphy is returning for a third 48 Hrs. with Kevin Hart attached to co-star and Craig Brewer in talks to direct.
There’s no word on whether or not Nick Nolte will join Eddie Murphy as San Francisco Inspector Jack Cates, and all things considered that isn’t particularly surprising. While Nolte has made some memorable screen appearances in the past few years — most notably in Peacock’s Poker Face and in the inaugural season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian — substance abuse and scandal haven’t been kind to his career.
Not to mention that many believe Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte had a falling out after the first 48 Hrs. sequel, 1990’s Another 48 Hrs., proved a critical and commercial flop.
As Eighties Kids recalls, during and after the production of the first film, Murphy and Nolte reportedly became close friends. But after the sequel, they never worked together again.
Along with raking in the dough, 48 Hrs. proved Murphy could do both action and comedy, something that would be integral in later films like Beverly Hills Cop and The Golden Child.
The potential of Kevin Hart filling the buddy role in the threequel suggests one of the most — for better or worse — controversial and memorable elements of 48 Hrs. will take a rest in the upcoming film. The first film is crowded with racial slurs, most of them directed at Eddie Murphy’s character from Nolte’s, in spite of Nolte’s Jack Cates being the main hero. It’s difficult if not impossible to imagine the same movie being made today.
Brewer directed Murphy in both 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name and 2021’s Coming 2 America.
In fact, if you’ve been following news about the upcoming Deadpool 3, then you may recall hearing about 48 Hrs., because the Marvel stars regularly compare the Deadpool/Logan relationship to the one Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte’s heroes enjoy in the earlier film. Considering how much hate is exchanged between Hammond and Cates in the course of 48 Hrs. — including a merciless alley brawl between them — you can expect plenty of blood in Deadpool 3.
Craig Brewer’s potential involvement isn’t too surprising considering the filmmaker has been instrumental in Eddie Murphy’s comeback. Brewer directed Murphy in both 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name and 2021’s Coming 2 America.
48 Hrs. was not only integral to Eddie Murphy’s acting career, it was his feature film debut. While it wasn’t as big a hit as 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, it was an impressive success on its own, proving to be the tenth highest-grossing film of 1982 — beating the horror classic Poltergeist by about $2 million, and just barely getting edged out by Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan by a little over $100 thousand.
Along with raking in the dough, 48 Hrs. proved Murphy could do both action and comedy, something that would be integral in later films like Beverly Hills Cop and The Golden Child.
