Now that movie theaters are fully back and open for business, the blockbusters are coming hard and fast. Even the kids are getting big films, including the family-friendly animated superhero film DC League of Super-Pets, opening in theaters on July 29, 2022. The film will once again team up Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, who voice Krypto the Superdog and Ace the Bathound, respectively. The duo really delivered the laughs in the 2017 Jumanji reboot Welcome to the Jungle and the 2019 sequel The Next Level, and their chemistry is clicking once again in the new League of Super-Pets trailer.
The film features a collection of animals, some of whom suddenly get superpowers, and unite on a mission when Superman, Batman, and other members of the Justice League are kidnapped, according to Collider. Some of the animal characters date back to the early years of DC comic books, but this film is the first time in which they all take center stage in a “Justice League” of their own. In true Justice League style, the different animals will have to learn to get along and embrace their unique powers in order to complete their mission. Dwayne Johnson’s Krypto will be joined by John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) voicing Superman. Kevin Hart’s Ace will pair with Keanu Reeves as Batman. Check out the trailer for League of Super-Pets.
Joining Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are Vanessa Bayer as PB the Pot Bellied Pig, Natasha Lyonne as Merton the Turtle (a character dating back to the 1940s as a counterpart to The Flash), and Diego Luna as Chip the Squirrel, who was a Green Lantern in the original comics incarnation in 1982’s Green Lantern #148, according to MovieWeb. Dascha Polanco will voice Green Lantern/Jessica Cruz, and Marc Maron will voice Lex Luthor. Additional cast includes Kate McKinnon, Ben Schwartz, Jameela Jamil, and Thomas Middleditch. This isn’t Johnson’s first time voicing animated characters. He most notably voiced Maui in Disney’s Moana in 2016.
DC has seemingly had no problem with exploring all corners of their comic book universe on the big screen, including featuring different cinematic versions of iconic heroes like Batman. It should be no surprise, then, that they have no problem with Dwayne Johnson playing both Black Adam and Krypto in the same year. His Black Adam film doesn’t open until October 21, but coincidentally, was supposed to release on July 29 until production delays moved it to the fall. With League of Super-Pets now occupying that date, Johnson will be featured on theater screens somewhere for most of 2022.
Johnson, who just turned 50 on Monday, is on a roll professionally, with a string of hits that has made him Hollywood’s most bankable action star. He had two hit films last year: Jungle Cruise for Disney, and Red Notice (with Gal ‘Wonder Woman’ Gadot and Ryan ‘Deadpool’ Reynolds) for Netflix. His past hits include Skyscraper, Rampage, and multiple Fast and Furious films, including the spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. His upcoming projects include the video game adaptation It Takes Two, a big-screen version of Doc Savage and a remake of Big Trouble in Little China.
