Dwayne Johnson has some lofty goals for DC and his Black Adam movie. The man has already expressed interest in being part of a Marvel and DC crossover film. Now, it appears that he is pitching for spinoff movies to also take place within the Black Adam universe. With how messy things have become in the DC universe, we would say that it’s not a bad idea to build an entire story of films around Black Adam. He has been reimagined as an anti-hero, so there could be some exploration going on that will test Adam’s moral ground. According to Johnson, “The goal is to really expand the universe, and introduce new characters, and spin-off, and be really strategic about the plan. We have a few ideas of what characters people are really going to respond to in Black Adam.”
Black Adam is reportedly going to be the movie that changes the DCEU for the foreseeable future, so it would make sense to have spinoff films dedicated to exploring characters introduced in the first movie. Black Adam will also meet the Justice Society of America, which is a team that predates the Justice League. Also, the villains in the film are Intergang, who have ties to both Darkseid and Apokolips. Dwayne Johnson could have done his homework and now thought of a plan to further extend what Black Adam will mean to the entire DC universe.
DC has been in limbo in recent weeks, as the Warner Bros. Discovery merger has caused some rather alarming updates. Batgirl was canceled, leaving behind a film that was highly anticipated by fans and cost around $90 million to make. Also, Ezra Miller’s legal troubles began to get even worse, leaving everyone to wonder if The Flash was going to be canceled too. Miller is now getting help, which is great. However, there has not yet been any indication of any of the other DC films are going to be canceled too. That includes Blue Beetle and Black Canary. For now, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods seems to be the anchor point for the rest of the DCEU moving forward. Dwayne Johnson and Zachary Levi might be fighting sooner than they think.
There is plenty of opportunity for solo movies that can expand the character backstories in Black Adam. Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, Cyclone, and Sabacc are just a few of the characters that will be appearing in the film. All of them could get their time to shine in spinoff films. Although DC initially tried to do that with the Zack Snyder era and failed, it could be time for Dwayne Johnson to step in and lead the way.
Black Adam is set to debut on October 21, 2022. The film will be the first big release for DC since the Snyder Cut of Justice League and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The rumors are that through the film and a post-credit scene, we are going to see a much better idea of where DC is going to take its next big arc. Hopefully, things go a bit smoother from here on out. Dwayne Johnson has become quite a masterful producer when it comes to storylines and franchises. He might be instrumental in getting DC back on a course that excites fans again.
