It took a lot more than shouting a word to get Black Adam made. Now, with the film finally confirmed for release next year, Dwayne Johnson is finally free to give fans significant updates. Now an image was just released giving us the clearest view we’ve had yet of Johnson’s Black Adam costume.
Dwayne Johnson appears on the cover of the latest issue of Total Film (via ScreenRant), due out this Thursday, with the front of Black Adam’s outfit revealed. The difference between Adam’s look and that of his more traditionally heroic counterpart — Zachary Levi’s Shazam — is striking. Not only is Adam’s costume much darker than Shazam’s, but the most obvious difference is the thunderbolt insignia on his chest. Unlike Shazam’s, Adam’s thunderbolt looks scorched either from more years of use, or simply as a sign of more power — either of which seem fitting considering what we’ve heard about the film. You can see the new image of Black Adam below.
Dwayne Johnson uploaded the cover to his Instagram and, as usual, took the opportunity to imply Black Adam is the new DC hero to beat. Captioning the cover, Johnson starts with the quote he attributes to his character: “The world needed a hero, instead it got me.” He continues that the new issue of Total Film will include his “10yr journey of bringing the Khandaq disrupter to the big screen” and says that there “is NO ONE like Black Adam in the pantheon of superheroes and supervillains.” And finally, as he has quite a few times in the past couple of months, tells us “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is changing.”
While Dwayne Johnson says it’s taken him 10 years to make Black Adam, for the first time, he may just be underselling himself. As early as 2007, The Rock was attached to play the character, though originally he was being recruited not as the star of his own film, but as the antagonist for Shazam! with some reports suggesting Johnson might play Shazam. It wasn’t until 10 years later, in 2017, that it was officially announced that rather than trading blows with Zachary Levi, Johnson would introduce Black Adam in a solo film.
For a long time, it seemed like Black Adam could be the victim of development limbo, with nothing but concept art and vague promises emerging. In October, as part of the DC FanDome event, Dwayne Johnson introduced our first look at the film, including the titular antihero in action. While what was shown was just part of a scene, it illustrates Black Adam’s power and brutality. We see a group of soldiers encountering Adam, and Adam’s first response is to grab one by the throat and use his lightning powers to reduce the soldier to literal ash. However, Johnson is completely cloaked in the scene, giving us just the briefest look at the front of his costume until now.
Black Adam is due to hit theaters July 29, 2022. It’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan) from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani — who previously collaborated on The Mauritanian — and Adam Sztykiel (Rampage). It stars Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge (Hidden Figures) as Hawkman, Sarah Shahi (Alias) as Adrianna Tomaz, Quintessa Swindell (Voyagers) as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate.
