The holiday season is almost upon us! Soon, there will be a cool chill in the air with snow in some parts of the country, and of course, a slew of new holiday-themed content to binge while sipping on a cup of hot cocoa by the fire. While we may need to wait another year for it, one of the most anticipated films of next year’s merry-making season is Prime Video’s Red One which is set to star Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. Adding a bit of mysticism and magic to the project, Deadline has revealed that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Kiernan Shipka will be adding her name to the film’s call sheet.
That’s right, moving right along from the witchy teenage hijinks carried out by her portrayal of the titular character in the Netflix series, the show’s star is moving on to join Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in bringing the holiday spirit to homes around the world. Jake Kasdan, known for his work behind the camera on the Jumanji franchise, joins the production as its director which gives us a glimpse of some of the action-packed comedy happenings we can expect to see play out during the film. While the plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, we do know that it will see its main characters globetrotting on some sort of adventure while bringing the spirit of the holidays to viewers everywhere.
Not only does the feature mark a reunion for Dwayne Johnson and Jake Kasdan who previously worked together on the Jumanji films, but it also pairs the leading man back up with screenwriter Chris Morgan. In the past, Morgan has been the scribe behind high-octane favorites including Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, The Fate of the Furious, Furious 7, Fast & Furious 6, and Fast Five, bringing it all full circle. Kasdan and Melvin Mar will produce on behalf of The Detective Agency, Morgan under his Chris Morgan Productions, and Seven Bucks Productions’ Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, and Johnson. The Detective Agency’s Sky Salem Robinson will serve as co-producer.
Dwayne Johnson’s addition to the film was made public all the way back in June 2021. Referring to the project as “exciting,” Johnson dropped the news that not only would he be starring in the production, but that his company would be producing. The piece was picked up by Amazon after a highly competitive bidding situation and is packed with what Johnson called “a lot of positive energy and passion.”
This year has been a busy one for Dwayne Johnson as The Scorpion King star has held down roles in not one, but two DC films. Most recently, the pro wrestler turned movie star appeared in the incredibly cute, animated feature, DC League of Super Pets in which he voiced Superman’s pet dog, Bark Kent aka Krypto the Superdog, and was also heard as Anubis. He’ll also soon be starring in the highly anticipated DCEU feature, Black Adam, in which he plays the titular antihero.
Gearing up to hit screens on October 21, the Shazam! spinoff will see Dwayne Johnson step into the role of Black Adam who has just been released from five-thousand years of imprisonment. Not one to shy away from cold, hard justice, the brutal antihero soon meets the Justice Society of America who tries to teach him how to use his powers for good as they prepare to take on an incredibly powerful adversary.
