Dune Part 2 Coming Even Earlier Than Expected

Those who can’t wait for Dune Part 2 are in luck, as Variety reported the movie just got moved up to an earlier release date. Originally, the film was set to be released on November 17, 2023, but it will now hit theaters on November 3, 2023. The wait to head back and join Paul Atreides in Arrakis felt like forever, so this is welcome news for fans.
Dune Part 2 will directly follow the events of the first film and adapt the second half of the seminal 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name. When we last left Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet), he and his mother were able to impress the Fremen and be welcomed into their sietch. The second part will follow Paul as he works toward avenging the betrayal of his family and the death of his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac).
It’s no surprise that Dune Part 2‘s filming and production were fast-tracked after the undeniable success of Dune. Sci-fi director extraordinaire Denis Villeneuve did what many thought was an impossible task and adapted the film in a way that pleased book fans and general audiences alike. The film managed to bring in $108.3 million at the domestic box office alone and brought in over $401 million worldwide.
While Dune was released during a time many were still reluctant to return to theaters amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Dune Part 2 shouldn’t have to face similar obstacles. With fans at home having plenty of time to stream the first Dune on HBO Max, there’s definitely potential for Dune Part 2 to have an even bigger showing. Not only could Dune Part 2 exceed the box office success of the first film, but it could also have a chance to outshine its predecessor at the Oscars.
Dune was no slouch when it appeared at the Academy Awards. It managed to take home six trophies for Best Sounds, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography. It was also nominated in several other prestigious categories, including Best Picture, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Dune Part 2 will bring back many familiar faces, including Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Charlotte Rampling. Fans are also anticipating the appearance of other favorite book characters like Princess Irulan, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Lady Margot, and Emperor Shaddam IV. The casting department didn’t let us down and those roles will be played by Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Lea Seydoux, and Christopher Walken, respectively.
As mentioned, Denis Villeneuve is also returning to the director’s chair for Dune Part 2 and co-writes the script with Jon Spaihts. Fans of the book know that there are some huge moments coming up that will look great shot through Villeneuve’s lens. Seeing that the release date is moved up by two weeks is great news for anyone who can’t wait to see one of the best sci-fi books get the modern-day blockbuster treatment, so make sure to go see Dune Part 2 in theaters when it comes out on November 3.
