Exclusive: Dumb And Dumber 3 Is Happening, Jim Carrey And Jeff Daniels Returning
Dumb and Dumber 3 will bring back the original stars once again.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are both returning to the iconic roles of Lloyd Chrismas and Harry Dunne for Dumb and Dumber 3. According to our trusted and proven sources, the stars of the original 1994 Farrelly Brothers film will be reprising the duo of good-natured but extremely dimwitted friends for a third movie. This seems to follow a recent trend in which Jim Carrey has become oddly interested in sequels to movies of his from decades past.
Dumb and Dumber 3 would presumably pick up after the events of 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To, which brought Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back for the first time since the original. Although the long-in-the-works sequel did not gain the kind of cultural traction as the original, it made a tidy $169 million off a $50 million budget, which is apparently enough to get a third movie made. While the Dumb and Dumber franchise has never been what one would call critically respected, it does have name-brand recognition enough to make Dumb and Dumber 3 a viable commercial prospect.
While Dumb and Dumber To will likely inform the adventures of Dumb and Dumber 3, it was not the first extension of the original movie, which was directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly and co-written with his brother Bobby and Bennett Yellin. In 2003, the prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd starred Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen in the Carrey and Daniels roles; while it made $39 million at the box office, it did not spark a revival of the series at the time. Notably, the Farrellys, Jim Carrey, and Jeff Daniels were not involved in the prequel, which likely contributed to the tepid response to the movie.
But even before that, Dumb and Dumber was turned into a bizarre animated children’s show in 1995, which ran for 13 episodes on ABC. It was part of a wave of attempts to turn raunchy Jim Carrey vehicles into children’s entertainment, which also included animated versions of The Mask and Ace Venture: Pet Detective.
All of this is to say, Dumb and Dumber 3 has a relatively low bar to clear in terms of quality as a sequel. While Jim Carrey briefly made some comments alluding to a possible retirement in 2022, it appears that the actor is ready to go full tilt into a wave of new films. While the actor was famously averse to sequels to his films for years, we have previously reported that he is working with Universal Pictures on a sequel to 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas and is interested in making Brucifer, the previously developed sequel to 2003’s Bruce Almighty.
It is unclear whether the Farrelly Brothers will also be involved in Dumb and Dumber 3, though, at minimum, they will likely receive producer credits for the new film. It is fun to see Jim Carrey deciding to go back to some of his older, goofier roles, and hopefully, he can catch that magic again.
