Drew Barrymore Just Dropped Out Of Hosting Huge Awards Show At Last Second
Drew Barrymore will not host the MTV Movie & TV Awards to show solidarity with the writers' strike.
Drew Barrymore has dropped out of hosting Sunday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity with the Writer’s Guild of America strike. The Hollywood Reporter reported on her statement, which in part said, “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike.” She did add that she is willing to come back and host the awards in 2024.
While the MTV Movie & TV Awards will still air on Sunday, it will do so without Drew Barrymore hosting, though she will likely still appear in some of the sketches recorded for the show. The awards will go without a host or any WGA writers in attendance, and the show also canceled its red carpet. It seems likely that Barrymore won’t be the only star skipping the event that was planning on going.
Along with Drew Barrymore hosting, the awards show was set to include presenters such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd, Busta Rhymes, Gal Gadot, Halle Bailey, and Dominique Fishback. It remains to be seen if any of the other presenters will choose to drop out amidst the strike. The award show is also set to present The White Lotus‘ Jennifer Coolidge with the Comedic Genius Award.
With or without Drew Barrymore, viewers will be able to catch the award show on MTV and other cable outlets. With the ongoing Writer’s Guild of America strike, it remains to be seen how other telecasts might be affected. Late-night talk shows have already switched to re-runs, and Saturday Night Live also canceled its upcoming Pete Davidson-hosted show as many of the show’s cast members and writers took to the picket lines.
Since Drew Barrymore announced an indefinite hiatus from acting in 2021, she doesn’t have any upcoming projects that might be affected by the writer’s strike. However, fans of her CBS daytime talk show The Drew Barrymore Show wondered if there would only be reruns of that show for the foreseeable future. While the series is airing some reruns this week, a CBS representative said that these were already scheduled.
The final episodes of The Drew Barrymore Show‘s season have already been recorded and will continue to air until the season finale on May 11. Recent episodes saw star Dove Cameron make an appearance. Fans can continue to watch the show on their local CBS station or stream it on Paramount+.
For now, it remains unclear how long the Writer’s Guild of America strike will go on, but negotiations over AI regulation, minimum writer compensation, mandatory staffing, and other key issues did not reach a favorable conclusion after weeks of negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Drew Barrymore likely won’t be the last star to side with the writers, and many Hollywood directors, actors, and producers have already taken a hard stance. In the meantime, we’ll update you on any new developments about the writer’s strike and how that situation is progressing.
