The ’90s Drew Barrymore Insane Thriller That No One Remembers Is Free To Stream Right Here
Over her decade-spanning career in Hollywood, Drew Barrymore has delivered knock-out performances in every genre under the sun.
While many will never forget her early roles in titles including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Firestarter, some have never seen one of her strangest projects from the early ‘90s – Doppelganger.
Luckily, anyone who’s interested can catch the film out right now for free as it’s streaming on Tubi.
Drew Barrymore Is In Doppelganger
Just short of 20 years old, the 1993 film sees Drew Barrymore in a supernatural horror flick as a young woman named Holly, who, after being named as a suspect in a murder, moves from New York City to Los Angeles.
Trouble seems to follow Holly wherever she goes as even on the other side of the country, she’s plagued by a strange alter-ego presence who may be her doppelganger.
A non-stop thrill ride, the dark and psychological film will keep audiences guessing until the final moments.
Doppelganger Cast
Along with Drew Barrymore, Doppelganger also stars George Newbern, who is best known for his role in ABC’s Scandal as well as in the Father of the Bride franchise.
Filling out the ensemble cast were names that included Dennis Christopher (Django Unchained), Academy Award-nominee Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H), Leslie Hope (Suits), Peter Dobson (Last Exit to Brooklyn), and television star George Maharis (Route 66) in what would be the actor’s final production before his death.
The movie also featured a small appearance from Barrymore’s mother, Jaid Barrymore.
Doppelganger Reception
Doppelganger was under the direction of Avi Nesher and despite lackluster reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it was nominated for the “Grand Prize” award at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival where it celebrated its premiere back in 1993.
Currently, the title sits at 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, marking one of the lower-rated movies of Barrymore’s career but still an interesting one for fans of the actress to catch – especially while it’s streaming for free.
Movie Broke The Rules
Despite not receiving much pushback for it, Doppelganger broke the rules when it featured Drew Barrymore in a nude scene.
The actress was only 17 years old at the time of filming which certainly ruffled a few feathers in the industry and beyond.
Doing a scene with that kind of content, however, was no strange thing for Barrymore who, the year prior, had appeared completely nude in an issue of Interview Magazine at only 16 years old.
Release Schedule And Competition
Doppelganger came out in between Drew Barrymore’s appearances in No Place to Hide and Wayne’s World 2.
All three titles arrived in 1993 with Barrymore being one of the most sought-after young actresses during that time.
Although Doppelganger may have left a mark on Nesher’s upcoming directorial career with its less-than-savory reviews, it didn’t slow Barrymore down one bit as the ‘90s were a flourishing decade for the star.
Drew Barrymore In Scream
Sticking in the same vein as Doppelganger, Drew Barrymore would have a featured performance in Wes Craven’s 1996 classic horror flick, Scream.
While her character Casey Becker is only in the movie for a moment, Barrymore was billed as a leading character, adding some extra shock value to her sudden departure.
The movie, which of course has gone on to become a billion-dollar-making franchise, solidified Drew Barrymore’s reign as a scream queen, despite the actress veering away from the horror genre during the remainder of her career.
Drew Barrymore’s Career
Outside of the psychologically thrilling world of Doppelganger and the beloved horror feature, Scream, Drew Barrymore has gone on to star in a majority of drama and comedy productions.
Frequently collaborating with fellow ‘90s star, Adam Sandler, the duo have appeared opposite one another in titles including The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and Blended. She also dipped into the world of directing with the 2009 sports comedy film, Whip It, which was based around a roller derby team.
The Drew Barrymore Show
It’s been three years since audiences have seen Drew Barrymore appear in a leading role in a feature-length film with Jamie Babbit’s 2020 comedy, The Stand In being the last major undertaking of the performer.
These days, she’s content running her own talk show, aptly titled, The Drew Barrymore Show, which recently found itself in hot water during the writers’ strike.
The star’s career has certainly come a long way since 1993’s Doppelganger but you can take a trip back in time and on a mind-bending journey as the film is now streaming for free on Tubi.
