HBO Max has announced that Doom Patrol season 4 will premiere with two new episodes on December 8th, meaning the show will indeed not be canceled as other DC projects have recently been. A new episode will premiere each week leading up to January 5th. A preview of the upcoming season was released online, showing singing and dancing alien butts and some of everyone’s favorite characters.

According to Deadline, Doom Patrol season 4 begins when the team travels to the future and discovers “an unwelcome surprise.” The fate of the world hangs in the balance as the team faces new challenges and their “imminent demise.” CW’s Greg Berlanti once again produces the show alongside Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess, and showrunner Jeremy Carver.

There was a time when Doom Patrol season 4 seemed more like a pipe dream. We reported through our trusted and proven sources that many acclaimed DC shows, such as Titans and the animated Harley Quinn series, were on the chopping block at Warner Bros. Discovery. This was following the sudden cancelation of the Batgirl movie, initially set to come out on HBO Max before new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav canceled the project.

Doom Patrol season 4 also seemed like an unlikely possibility. However, the news of season 4 means the show will remain on the streamer for now. In addition to the December 8th premiere, it was announced that six more episodes from the season will air in 2023.

Doom Patrol season 4 sees the return of Brendan Fraser as Clift Steel, a.k.a. Robotman. Fraser has been on a bit of a comeback in Hollywood, appearing in the Darren Aronofsky psychological drama The Whale and getting much praise for his work in that picture. He had some interesting things to say about the cancelation of Batgirl, which he would’ve starred in as the Batman villain Firefly. He told Variety that he was “disappointed” with Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to cancel the project, describing it as the “canary in the coal mine” in the age of streaming services taking over the industry.

While Doom Patrol season 4 is sure to get everyone excited, there is still the question of the supposed spin-off Dead Boy Detectives. In November 2021, Variety reported that the Doom Patrol spin-off had cast two series leads and was moving along in pre-production. Then in April 2022, HBO Max gave it a series order, leaving many to believe the show would premiere sometime before the year’s end.

Perhaps the recent changes in Warner Bros. Discovery have halted production for the spin-off. Whatever the case, it’s at least great to hear that Doom Patrol season 4 is a go. The show’s third season premiered on HBO Max on September 23rd, 2021. Filming for the fourth season began in February 2022.

We’ll have to see how well Doom Patrol season 4 performs this year and whether the success or failure motivates those in charge to continue with the series going forward. Now that we know season 4 is coming and the Harley Quinn show is sticking around a bit longer, maybe Doom Patrol will get a season 5. On the other hand, it’s possible that the rumored selling of Warner Bros. Discovery to Comcast could mean these DC shows will eventually receive the same fate as Batgirl.
