Doctor Who fans will be delighted to know that showrunner Russell T. Davies has finally revealed in an interview when Doctor Who Season 14 will premiere. Although the timeframe might disappoint some people, there is at least an official date for the newest chapter of the regenerating Time Lord. Season 14 will make its debut on November 23, 2023. That might seem like a long time, but being that it’s the show’s 60th anniversary, the date sounds to be symbolic for all the right reasons.
Having to wait until 2023 for Doctor Who Season 14 may seem like a bummer, but now fans know exactly when they will be treated to one of TV’s longest-running sci-fi shows. More so than that, that gives a vague yet hopeful timeframe on when the new Doctor will also be revealed to the world. Since its revival in 2005, there have been five doctors who have served as the Time Lord: Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and the current Time Lord, Jodie Whittaker. Whittaker is said to be stepping down after this season, along with current showrunner Chris Chibnall.
Although the Doctor Who: Flux season finale ended on December 5th, both Chibnall and Whittaker are going to be involved in some specials that are set to air in 2022, but that will be their curtain call on their time with the show. Davies is going to be stepping into the place of showrunner for Chibnall, and he has plenty of time to prepare before Doctor Who Season 14 premieres in 2023. There is growing speculation that Davies might pull Lydia West or Olly Alexander from his most recent project, It’s A Sin, to serve as the fourteenth doctor.
Davies is actually the person responsible for the show’s revival back in 2005, though he has not been showrunner for the series since 2010. Now he returns to helm Doctor Who Season 14, which should excite many fans. There is no telling where Davies plans to take the show, as Flux took the series in a completely new direction. He may just want to continue the original formula or try something completely new. One thing is for sure, It’s A Sin was rated as the #1 show by The Guardian, who interviewed Davies about his return to Doctor Who.
Davies let it slip through that interview about the Doctor Who Season 14 premiere date but was quiet about who the next doctor would be. When asked about the show, he had this to say: “I’ve already written some of the episodes. The first will go out in November 2023 – that’s the 60th anniversary of the show.” Though he seems like a man of few words, a premiere date was still given when he could have just been quiet about all the details. It seems likely that he is working hard to keep the secrets of the next Doctor’s identity under wraps.
Fans can start speculating about who they would like to see and who might actually be the new doctor in the Doctor Who Season 14 premiere, but for now, there is plenty of time for newcomers to binge-watch the show to the point of its new season premiere date in 2023.
